Personalizing Your Portfolio
Use the menu on the right for everything.
Use the INSERT tab to insert textboxes, pictures or Google files like docs and slides.
Use the PAGES tab to navigate through your portfolio pages.
Use the THEMES tab to change the fonts and colors used on your pages.
1. Click on the Pages Tab and then click on the About Me page.
On this page you will embed the Cover Letter that you have written with Mrs. Lang. Open that document and copy the text of the letter.
Then paste it into the text box provided on the About Me page.
[If you want to be fancy: paste each paragraph into a separate text box.
Then use the paint palette on the left of the text boxes to alternate the
backgrounds.]
2. Click on the Resume page.
On this page you will embed your resume. Click on the Insert tab.
Click on Docs. Find your resume and select it.
Your resume will show up, but it will probably be cut off.
Resize the box (pull the bottom down) until the entire resume can be seen.
You may have to look the page in preview mode to see if the whole resume
is showing. You can do that later.
Note: Whenever you link your portfolio to any kind of document that you have on your Google Drive, you need to make sure that it is "shared with everyone", otherwise it won't open for others.
To do this: In Google Drive, simply right click on the document (ie your resume).
Click on Share and then Share again.
On the pop-up, under General Access, click the dropdown arrow and switch the access to Anyone with the link.
3. Go back to the web pages and choose the Certifications page.
If you have any certifications, put them here. The tan box is a table of contents and it will automatically populate with the Headers you put below.
For each certification you have, type in the title of the certification in the provided text box.
You should see it appear in the table of contents.
From the Insert tab, click on Image and upload a picture of your certificate.
Move it to the proper place. Delete the placeholder image.
Note: If you DO NOT have any certifications, in the pages tab,
Click on the three dots to the right of the Certifications page.
From the pop up menu, select “Hide from Navigation”.
The page icon will then have a slash through it.
This page will no longer show up as a link on your homepage.
In the future, if you get any certifications, you will be able to
“Show” this page again.
4. Click on the Skills/Projects page. will be worked on separately throughout the year.
Every month, you will add examples of skills you learned or projects you complete in your OSTC program.
Your instructor can guide you.
For each month:
Add a title of Skill Learned or Project. Change the style to be a heading. This way it will automatically show up in the table of contents.
Add a textbox with a shor description of the skills you learned.
ADD 1 or 2 PICTURES of you doing your skill/project or the end result.
THIS MEANS YOU NEED TO TAKE PICTURES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR OF YOUR WORK!!!!!!
You can insert an Image carousel for a series of pictures (on the insert tab).
You can create a montage of work you've done over time if it helps to show the breadth and depth of your skill.
This would take up too much space on the page though.
It would be best to create a subpage and but a link in your description to it. On the subpage, insert your image and a "back" button. To insert a button, click on Button on the insert tab, and put "Back" in the Name and "Skills/Projects" in the Link spaces on the pop-up.
You can put in a selection of pictures with labels if you want to show that you have learned many skills in the same area. (The Content Blocks on the Insert tab is a good way to do this)
IMPORTANT: (At least) ONE of your skills will be/was evaluated by a professional. You NEED TO include their feedback for that skill.
Your description of the skill could include something like this:
"This is an example of a 45 degree haircut that I did on my mannequin. It was graded by a professional cosmetologist following this rubric. This was the assessment of my skill."
Then create links to the rubric and your assessment, which will live in your portfolio folder.
To do this:
In Google Drive, set the document so that it is shared with everyone. Then click the Copy Link button.
Highlight the text where the link will be (what you will click on).
Click the link icon next to the emoji icon in the text toolbar.
On the Link line of the popup, paste the link you copied. If you want to edit the link in the future, use the pencil that appears when you click it.
5. Click on the Work Experience page.
If you have work experience that showcased certain skills that will help you in the jobs you are looking for, you will note them here. Include where it was, what your role was, what skills you learned, and any insights you learned about your chosen career. Also, if you have done any job shadowing through OSTC, it will go here.
If you have pictures of yourself at the job or of something related to the job you did or a logo of the business, you can include it.
If you haven't had any experiences that fit this, Hide this page until you do.
6. Click on the Career Exploration page.
On this page, upload the three career tree worksheets where the plus signs are.
Add comments below in the text boxes briefly explaining the point of each worksheet.
Copy the text of your career tree essay and paste it in the text box below the worksheets.
7. Click on the Recommendations page.
On this page, you will add two letters of recommendation. You will type the name of the person writing the letter and their relationship to you. The name will appear in the table of contents above. In the text box below the name, you will copy the text of the letter and paste it into the text box. Repeat with the second letter.
Don't stop there!
Don't forget this is YOUR portfolio. You can add more pages and personalize anything you like.
You can change how things look, including the banner pictures.
You can also add pages that explain more about you.
An Activities page, demonstrating what you do outside of school can really spotlight who you are.
For example, you might be in clubs that employers should know about (SkillsUSA, HOSA, BPA, Robotics, etc.)
Even hobbies and sports demonstrate dedication and teamwork.
Community Service also looks good.
Just remember to not add so much it gets burdensome to look through
or add things that make it seem "childish" (employers don't need to know you like unicorns).
This is only supposed to be "your best work".
