Just a bunch of local Jamestown folk trying to start a biking tradition in Jamestown.
I've ridden many a mile on two-lane asphalt up north, but gave it up when I moved to Tennessee. The roads were too narrow, too curvy, with too many hidden hills that could get you killed. But the farm land around Allardt, TN has many nice roads with low traffic. If we ride in groups, with flashers forward and back, and use a little common sense, we can ride safely in Fentress County.
Tennessee Law gives you 3 feet of roadway. USE IT! If you hug the white line by 6 inches, the cars will only give you six and a half inches. Riding 18” from the white line forces passing cars to pass you in the complete passing lane rather than skim by you if you're hugging the edge.
Wave! Goodwill goes a long way when you've forced a car to slow way down and wait on you.
Highway US 127 is a very safe road to ride, as the shoulder is 8-10' wide. Stay on the correct side (with traffic) and avoid the glass, and you can ride to Grimsley TN and back in a about an hour. We try to avoid Rugby Pike (TN 52), but it's not always possible. Where we do ride on Rugby Pike it's a straight shot, no blind curves or hills. We always make an effort to “get it” on 52, and not muck about.
Wear reflective clothing, use flashers if possible, a helmet is always a good idea.
The routes detailed in this folder are loops, but also allow for back tracking. Some of the MAPS show Mountain Bike typical lengths (under 20 miles) while other show routes that a typical road biker might go: 20, 25, 30, 40.
Every route ends at Sawbriar. Every route ends with a cool, satisfying beer. Our goal is to make this a weekly tradition, with every biker finishing their trek around 5pm on Saturday, in time for delicious food and BEER! Choose your route, choose your bike type, back-figure how long you'll be out, and we'll meet up again around 5 and share road warrior stories. Sign the BREW LOG at Sawbriar when you're done!
