Field placement supervisors should contact the Clinical Field Placement Team (CFPT) if a student is having difficulty during the field placement experience or is in jeopardy of not passing (see CALIPSO Rating Scale). The Clinical Field Placement Team will work along with the field placement supervisor to incorporate a remediation program to help the student achieve clinical competency at the site. This may include a Practicum Success Plan (PSP) created by the CFPT in conjunction with the field placement supervisor or a referral to the Student Progress and Awards Committee (SPAC). The SPAC consists of a panel of faculty and staff members within the Department of CSD who are well versed in the department and university policies and procedures. Decisions of the SPAC are made collaboratively with members of the committee.
A PSP may be implemented and developed at any point during the Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence. The individualized PSP goals are designed to strengthen pedagogical foundations and may include meeting and reviewing course content with lead instructors, strengthening clinical skills by direct modeling of therapeutic strategies by the supervisor, and/or professional practice skills by engaging in role-playing scenarios to improve specific skills. PSP goals are developed during a multitiered collaborative and supportive process designed to strengthen student knowledge, clinical skills, and/or professional practice skills and overseen by the clinical supervisor and the CFPT. Students & supervisors will assess PSP goal progress on a weekly basis and communicate this progress to the CFPT. Please see the Support & Accountability page for additional details.
Students must successfully meet the goals of their PSP plan and maintain those PSP goals without requiring the PSP in order to proceed to the next step of the Field Placement Sequence. If a student does not pass the PSP or is placed back on a PSP, they will not receive a passing competency rating through CALIPSO and therefore will be required to repeat the practicum or field placement experience and seminar course.
Students assigned to a PSP will remain on this plan until their knowledge and skills are measured to be met and maintained by the required stakeholders. Depending on the individualized student needs, meetings with the required and/or additional stakeholders may be facilitated. If a student fails two separate practica and/or field placement experiences, regardless of the semester, the student will be referred to the Student Progress and Awards Committee (SPAC) for the next steps.
