Field placement supervisors are responsible for evaluating students clinical and professional competenices set forth by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA). The department requires that this is done at both the midpoint and endpoint of the semester.
All clinical and academic documentation in our department is managed by a web-based program called CALIPSO and measured using a five-point rating scale designed by the members of the NYU CSD Clinic Committee.

Clinical and professional competencies are divided into four sections (Evaluation, Intervention, Professional Practice, Interaction & Personal Qualities, and Clinical Writing) within the student performance evaluation located in CALIPSO. In an effort to provide the student with an accurate representation of their skills across the four sections, the field placement supervisor will objectively rate each individual competency based on the skills observed and the student’s level of independence during that specific point in time (e.g. midterm vs. final) across the ASHA Nine Disorders. This allows the supervisor(s) to quantitatively assess the students competencies, and assures that the student is meeting both the ASHA and NYU graduation requirements.
It is important to note that a final CALIPSO evaluation must capture and assess the students’ development of their clinical and professional competencies across the semester. Please refer to the Final Evaluation Walkthrough resource for additional information.
If a student did not have additional opportunities to grow in various competencies in the evaluation or intervention sections for specific disorders, then the rating score must remain the same from midterm to final.
If your graduate student clinician is demonstrating difficulty in either their clinical or professional practice competencies, it is encouraged that you utilize the Recommended Conversation Starters to address the concern. The focus of this outline is to make the graduate student clinician aware of the new issues or continuation of the same issues discussed in informal conversations. If after two informal conversations or following implementation of this outline, no improvement is made please contact the Clinical Field Placement Team (CFPT) at csdfieldplacement@nyu.edu. Please refer to the Support & Accountability page to learn more about the tiers of support offered.
Although the Seminar Course Instructor is ultimately responsible for providing the student’s final grade, the field placement supervisor’s midterm and/or final CALIPSO evaluation consists of a significant portion of the student’s final grade. Therefore, it is important to accurately assess the student’s clinical competencies. Please refer to the CALIPSO Rating Scale Breakdown for additional details.
For Practicum III, the midterm and final evaluation rating scores are each a separate percentage of the student's final grade for the seminar course with the final evaluation rating score being weighed at a higher percentage than at midterm. The exact breakdown will be on the course syllabi. As a student progresses in the Clinical Practicum and Field Placement Sequence, it is expected that the student’s independence will grow and clinical skills will carry over from one setting to another. Therefore, the evaluation rating scores in CALIPSO are converted by the Practicum Instructor into a letter grade and in turn a course percentage, to reflect the increased expectation. The evaluation rating score conversion scale has been determined by the Clinic Committee. Please refer to the CALIPSO Rating Scale for additional details.
Field placement has two components: the seminar course and the field placement experience. The midterm and final evaluation rating scores in CALIPSO are collected by the Clinical Field Placement Team and shared with the Practicum Seminar Course Instructor. The student’s final Practicum Course grade is comprised of seminar course assignments, participation, and midterm, and/or final evaluation rating scores. The Practicum Course grade is ultimately determined by the Practicum Instructor as each instructor designs the course grading rubric based upon the level of the field placement sequence, and at times, during special circumstances, in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Education and the Director of Field Placement Programs.
For the advanced field placements (Field Placement IV and Field Placement V), students receive a competency rating at midterm. This midterm evaluation rating score is not factored into a percentage of the student’s final grade. It is strictly used as a checkpoint for the student and field supervisor. The final evaluation rating score is the only rating score that is included in the final Practicum Seminar Course grade. Please refer to the CALIPSO Rating Scale for additional details.
