One of the many things that makes Silver special is that it has its very own office devoted to career and professional development, specifically for Silver students. The Office of Career & Professional Development at NYU Silver School of Social Work in partnership with the NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development strives to prepare the best career-ready social workers in the field by providing personalized, inclusive, and student-centered guidance and partnering with faculty, alumni, and other departments to strategically integrate career competencies into all aspects of the student experience. We aim to promote continual personal, professional, and community growth by offering comprehensive resources, tools, and programs including, but not limited to:
Career preparation and skills-based workshops on topics such as salary negotiation, job search strategies, and interviewing
Opportunities to connect with alumni, faculty, and practitioners in the field representing various social work pathways
1:1 career coaching for NYU Silver students
Professional development events and programs on topics such as navigating the profession with different social identities, reframing impostor syndrome, building connections with your communities, and more
Licensing process resources and support
Virtual tools and resources such as Handshake,Virtual Silver CPD, and a biweekly newsletter
Through these initiatives, we hope to serve as a bridge between students’ academic experiences, identities, and their professional paths; facilitate successful and fulfilling career journeys; and contribute to Silver’s mission to prepare forward-thinking leaders with the readiness to advance the social work profession.
Sooah is building and leading the Office of Career & Professional Development as the Associate Director. Sooah obtained her M.A. in International Education from NYU Steinhardt and has a background rooted in education, advocacy, and diversity, equity, and inclusion work. She has worked with populations such as immigrants and refugees, English language learners and international students, students of color and other identity-based groups, and in a variety of contexts including nonprofit organizations focused on immigration services and policy, New York City public schools, and higher education institutions where she has gained valuable experience in student development, learning design, community engagement, and program implementation.
Most recently, Sooah worked at NYU’s Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP) where she provided support to marginalized groups on campus and created innovative trainings and programs to engage NYU students, staff, and faculty around topics related to diversity and social justice. Sooah gets energized about building community, guiding community members through their own learning processes, and reframing and reimagining ways of thinking and doing. Sooah looks forward to working with Silver students, exploring possibilities and providing resources to be the most equipped and career-ready social workers in the field.
Grace (she/her) is the Administrative Aide for the Office of Career & Professional Development as well as the Office of Inclusive Engagement & Student Life. Grace also serves as support staff for Courtney O’Mealley, Associate Dean of Student Affairs. In her role as the Administrative Aide for the Office of Career & Professional Development, Grace serves as the front-facing liaison to students, faculty, alumni, and other community partners. Grace supports the career coaching appointment scheduling process, maintains event pages and web portals, performs event logistics, and will be your go-to for all general inquiries related to co-curricular and student life activities. Prior to her role at NYU Silver, Grace served as a temporary Program Coordinator for the Office of Professional Development at NYU Dentistry. Grace is also a graduate student in NYU Steinhardt’s Sociology of Education program!
Grace speaks four languages (French, Spanish, Italian, and English!), plays guitar, and enjoys any and all creative outlets.
Angelica is the MSW Intern for the Office of Career & Professional Development. She is pursuing a Master of Social Work at the New York University Silver School of Social Work through the Extended One Year Residency Pathway and is set to graduate in May 2023. Additionally, Angelica is currently serving as a fellow in the following fellowships: Adaptive Leadership For Human Services Fellowship and Social Sector Leadership Diversity Fellowship. She has previously occupied the following leadership positions in student-led organizations: Graduate Orientation Leader for the Graduate Orientation Leader Team, Social Justice and Diversity Co-Representative for the Graduate Student Association, co-leader of the Black Women Social Work Coalition, and co-leader of Silver Peer Support. Prior to attending NYU Silver, Angelica graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Composition at the State University New York at Binghamton.
Angelica’s passion for social work solidified through her four-year tenure as a Community Navigator at the Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work and Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Her role was to serve as an intermediary between individuals, groups, and the systems that govern their lives by locating, connecting, and engaging with social service agencies in order to provide the participant with the most effective and individualized care. Angelica’s passion for social work continued through her one-year tenure as a Program Manager at iMentor Incorporated. Her role was to increase her cohort’s post-secondary matriculation and graduation by teaching mentees about the post-secondary application process by utilizing the iMentor curriculum and mentorship, coaching mentors regarding the best practices for supporting their mentees through the post-secondary application process, and facilitating monthly events for mentees and mentors in order to help build their relationships through socio-emotional and academic support. Angelica’s career goals include becoming a licensed therapist who provides affirming care to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and Immigrant Communities and becoming a policy analyst who specializes in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She was born and raised in Harlem, New York, and identifies as a proud Dominican woman! Her hobbies include reading, writing, partying, and traveling!
