I need to travel for a competition and I will be missing a class during that time, is there a letter that I can get from the OSAE verifying this to my professor or informing my professor of my absences?
Answer: Yes, you may request a class absence letter from the Office of Student-Athlete Excellence. The official form to request for class absence letters is available through the OSAE website under 'Important Forms'. All requests for class absence letters must be made at least one week prior to the first date of class absence.
This letter only informs your professor that you will miss class for a team competition. It does not excuse you from completing course requirements.
What if I have an exam on the day of an away game?
Answer: You must immediately notify your professor of the time conflict and inquire as to what alternate options (if any) he/she can suggest. You must NEVER expect an instructor to accommodate you with an alternate testing date/time due to a schedule conflict with a competition.
If your professor is unable to reschedule your testing date/time, you must notify your coach and inquire as to the possibility of changing your specific travel arrangements in order for you to complete your exam and also travel for competition. If you are unable to make such arrangements, it is your primary responsibility to complete your scheduled exam even if this means missing your team's competition/event.
Please be proactive in identifying possible time conflicts to give yourself ample time to resolve the conflict.
I need to make changes to my class schedule but have a hold on my registration record, what should I do?
I am struggling in my class, can I get a tutor?
Answer: NYU student-athletes are eligible to receive one-on-one tutoring arranged through the AAO, only under the following circumstances:
1. Student-athlete first sought assistance from their professor, TA and/or departmental tutoring services AND
2. Student-athlete is doing 'C' level work or below and must have specific evidence of this fact (i.e. returned test paper, homework, etc.)
If you do not meet this requirements, you should attend walk-in tutoring through the University Learning Center or contact your department for tutoring options.
What if I have more than one final scheduled at the same date/time?
Answer: You must immediately notify your professors and inquire as to what options are available for taking the conflicting exams at alternate dates or times. If you are unable to arrange separate test taking times, you must notify the OSAE immediately to discuss other possible options.
Can I study abroad/study away and still participate in Varsity athletics?
Answer: Certainly! Many student-athletes study in one of NYU's Global Academic Centers during their off-season.
Will my Financial Aid be affected if I leave the team?
Answer: No, your participation in varsity athletics at NYU is in no way related to your Financial Aid package.
What if I have problems paying my tuition bill on time?
Answer: You must contact the Bursars office to discuss possible changes in your payment plan or an extension on your billing due date. If you still encounter difficulty after speaking with a representative from the Bursar's Office you must notify Denise Poole, well in advance of your stated tuition due date to discuss alternate options.
If I leave university housing, what happens if I want to return?
Answer: If you cancel your housing contract for reasons other than a school approved medical leave or to leave campus for an NYU study abroad program, this will affect your renewable status and you will no longer be guaranteed housing when you return to the lottery. Please see housing website for further details.
