TV Theme Song Analysis: Title Theme for Good Omens by David Arnold (TV Series, BBC, 2019–2023)

• Consider the following elements in your analysis: 

  • • Instrumentation, timbre, pitch registers, texture, articulations, dynamics

    • Pitch Material: melody, phrasing, melodic intervals, embellishing tones, motives and recurring themes, and modes (major vs. minor). 

    • Harmonic material: chord qualities, cadences, Roman numerals

    • Key Areas: What key does it start in? What key is the theme in m. 49 in? Ignoring the key signature, is mm. 33–48 in major or minor? In what key does the theme in m. 80 begin in? What is the interval relationship between the opening key and this key? What is the significance of that interval?

    • Rhythm, meter, rhythmic style

• Consider the plot for the TV series and the characters. How does David Arnold use musical elements in the title theme to highlight different elements of the show, good and evil, and the characters Aziraphale and Crowley?
