Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds a second layer of security to help prevent anyone other than you from accessing your sensitive information online. This is accomplished using two types of authentication to verify your identity when logging into the online systems at NYU, including email, education accounts, and other e-resources.
First, you need to log in with your password—something you created—and username (usually your NYU NetID).
Second, you use a physical device—something you have with you when you log in—such as your mobile phone, tablet, or landline phone, to confirm your identity.
The device that is most convenient for this purpose is a mobile phone with an MFA app installed on it. Alternatively, an SMS text message can be sent with a series of one-time passcodes for you to type in. Or, you can receive a phone call.
The service NYU uses for MFA is called Duo.
Set up Multi-Factor Authentication:
You will not be able to log in to Albert or your NYU Email until you register for NYU Multi-Factor Authentication. Navigate to start.nyu.edu and follow the online instructions.
Your NetID is used to sign in to all systems at NYU, and your University ID number (or N number) is used within NYU systems to maintain your records. You can find more information regarding this and using our Albert system on the Getting Started website.
Please note that access to NYU Email and e-resources will expire at the end of the summer term on August 16, so please be sure to save your work outside of your account prior to this date.
Should you experience any issues with your set-up, please contact NYU IT at AskIT@nyu.edu or by phone at 212-998-3333.
