Traveling Europe While In London

Since being in London for a bit over a month, I’ve had quite the experience with traveling. Having no classes on Monday and Friday makes every weekend a long one, so it’s easier for me to take an occasional weekend off for a trip. Whether I’m staying around London, exploring the rest of England, or leaving the country, I find myself out and about more than ever before. And yes, I am exhausted (still). However, I wanted to take advantage of the slower start at the beginning of the semester to take some trips outside of London, so here’s what my chaotic but rewarding first couple of weeks were like.

Paris

Paris was technically a pre-London trip for me, but it’s definitely worth talking about. There’s so much to do, maybe too much to do, that even my five days covered the bare minimum. It’s very surreal being right in front of every recognizable landmark or walking along the streets admiring all the shops, architecture, and attractions, like the Arc de Triomphe or the Palais Garnier. Of course, the Eiffel Tower (on every side and at every time) is a must. The Louvre is yet another iconic place to visit and appreciate some of the best art in the world. You can capture so many great pictures wherever you go, and the Seine River cruise will not disappoint for a unique perspective and relaxing experience. If you have the time, going a bit further out to the Palace of Versailles is magnificent. And trying all the Parisian food and pastries is an adventure of its own. Don’t forget about the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, Notre Dame Cathedral, Tuileries Garden, Champs-Élysées…I could go on and on. Surprisingly, the people in Paris are very friendly and not as rude as everyone says, so don’t worry.

The Grand Place in Brussels, Belgium

Brussels

I was in and out of Brussels within 12 hours, which I would say is enough if you’re looking for a short, easygoing trip just exploring the area around the main square and eating some classic Belgian food—waffles, chocolate, mussels, fries, and maybe Belgian beer while you’re there. The Eurostar is always a quick, easy option and not too expensive, especially if you book ahead of time. Like many European cities, most people can speak some English, so getting from place to place or ordering a meal is simple. The Grand Place is really lively with unique buildings and beautiful architecture. There was so much music and people at every corner, especially since I went during the Belgian Beer Weekend. Belgium is very close to London, so I highly recommend it, and staying for a couple of days will definitely be worth it if you want to venture out of the center of Brussels. Bruges is another amazing destination and an absolutely stunning city to make a day trip that’s not too far while you’re in Belgium.

Zurich

Switzerland is probably not a popular destination, but if you find yourself looking for somewhere to visit, definitely go to Zurich. Although Zurich is one of the most expensive cities to visit in Europe (I found out a little too late oops), the city is very scenic and calm, which creates the perfect weekend trip where you won’t feel too overwhelmed and can see so many different aspects of Swiss life. In the city center, there are plenty of shops and restaurants. The tram makes it easy to get from place to place. There are also so many places to go to outside of Zurich for a day trip to get the full Switzerland experience. Trust me, it’s absolutely unreal. Whether it’s Luzern, or Lungern where I went, you won’t ever forget the beauty and serenity. The water is the most turquoise shade of blue you’ll ever see. The grass is so, so green. The scenery is simply gorgeous. From the vast greenery to higher views of the Alps in the distance and admiring every sight above and below, all I could think about was if I was dreaming or looking straight at a painting. Definitely feels like an escape from reality. Although Zurich is on the expensive side, there’s a lot of walking (and lots of it is uphill), and it can get chilly, the city itself and unbelievable views of nature are so worth it.

Zurich, Switzerland

Whether you want to take a weekend trip to Paris, have a relaxing day trip to Brussels, or fly to Zurich, it’s all doable if you plan ahead while staying on top of classes. Definitely don’t overwhelm yourself. The idea of traveling every other week sounds amazing in theory, but it takes a lot of time and energy (and money) to book the flight, reserve an Airbnb, form a solid itinerary, and actually go out and do everything you planned. Plus, there’s so much to do in London, England, and the rest of the UK. Explore it. Also, don’t forget about school because that is why we’re here. Other than that, go travel around here and beyond!
