Hourly Appointment Policy Overview
Undergraduate and graduate students are appointed to hourly-paid roles as either non-work study or work study
Student may search for and apply to jobs via NYU Handshake
For undergraduate students, the minimum compensation rate is $16 per hour, effective January 1, 2024. For graduate students, the minimum compensation rate is set by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Graduate students may also be eligible for benefits in accordance with the CBA
The Wasserman Center manages NYU's on-campus employment policies (maximum hours per week, lunch breaks, etc.). Additional information is provided in the frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Finalizing Your Hourly Appointment
After securing a job offer, the hiring department or manager will work with you to finalize your appointment. Graduate students should receive a formal appointment letter. You will not be able to complete your timesheet for payment until your appointment is finalized
To be formally appointed, student employees must:
Complete U.S. employment eligibility verification (i-9) at the Wasserman Center (in-person & not virtually). The Wasserman Center provides the following Student Checklist
Submit to the hiring department or manager their "Wasserman Form" (a.k.a. Initial Application Form). The "Wasserman Form" can be downloaded from NYU Albert -- log in with your NetID, click “Other Resources”, and then “Wasserman”
Appointment documentation will then be submitted by the hiring department on behalf of the student to A&S Payroll for formal processing
Once your appointment is finalized, you will be able to submit your timesheets for payment and update your direct deposit information or default to receive paper checks for pick-up

Graduate Student Appointments
Course Staffing & Support
Graduate students may be appointed to support undergraduate or graduate instruction
Course staffing and hiring decisions are managed by each Department
Compensation amounts must follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
Graduate students may also be eligible for benefits in accordance with the CBA
Students may work for up to 20 hours per week during the semester and up to 35 hours per week during the summer, across all of their jobs (not per job)
Students must complete U.S. employment eligibility verification (i-9) at the Wasserman Center (in-person & not virtually)
Course Staffing Appointment Types
Section Leader
Graduate students typically work as a Section Leader for two (2) sections per semester
Section Leaders are paid per "contact hour" as they are leading the section. For Arts & Science, contact hours are typically calculated as 50 minutes of instruction
Instructor of Record
Graduate students may be assigned as Instructor of Record for the main lecture as determined by the Department and approved by the College of Arts & Science (CAS)
Grading
Arts & Science has historically paid for grading duties in addition to Section Leader duties
Grading is a non-union eligible position
Grading is paid via a flat $ rate for the semester
Course Assistant (CA) or Lab Assistant (CLA)
Graduate CAs perform a "bundle" of duties, such as lecture attendance, office hours, course prep, grading, & in-class break-out sessions. CAs may not lead the full lecture
CAs are paid per 60 minute “clock” hour
CAs are paid the minimum hourly rate per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
For Arts & Science, the typical student CA compensation is for 10 hours/week
10 hours/week is a maximum not an average
Any hours above the weekly cap must be pre-approved by the faculty supervisor
Spring break is excluded from the “standard” CA compensation amount
Research Assistantships
Science Research Assistants (RAs) are managed directly by the Science Departments:
Non-science departments may hire graduate students to assist with research into hourly roles
Graduate Student Health Insurance & Benefits
Benefits for Eligible Graduate Students
The Collective Bargaining Agreement between NYU and Local 2110 provides health insurance and other benefits to eligible students
Arts & Science graduate students who are not (or no longer) eligible members of Local 2110 may also be eligible for health insurance through their fellowship or through their employment as an adjunct faculty member (Local 7902). For Local 7902, please note that there is a one year qualification period
For more information about the NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Program, contact the Student Health Insurance Services Office at (212) 443-1020, via email at health.insurance@nyu.edu, or visit the Student Health Center website
Taxes & Tax Filing
Taxes for Domestic and International Students
Taxes for working are different to taxes for fellowship stipends. Payroll earnings for work are subject to federal, state and local taxes
For payroll earnings, students should complete their Federal Form W-4 and state and local tax withholding forms in PeopleSync (Workday)
International students (Nonresident Aliens) should complete Glacier Tax Prep Software to ensure their taxes are withheld correctly
NYU’s Office of Global Services (OGS) also provides a good overview of tax filing obligations for international students. The software program "NYU Glacier" is used for confirming the applicable tax rates for international students and "NYU Sprintax" is used for the actual federal and state filings
For questions please email nyu.glacier@nyu.edu
Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

On-campus supervisors must allow employees to complete the training during their work hours. Graduate adjunct employees (i.e., section leaders or instructors of record) receive additional compensation for completing the training
