Description

Interested in building your own websites? The Project Code: Frontend Web Development concentration will teach you how to create accessible, user-friendly, and interactive web pages.

There are two courses in this concentration:

Phase 1: HTML & CSS
Phase 2: JavaScript

What will you learn?

HTML

Learn the basics of creating and structuring content on a web page with HTML.

CSS

Apply CSS concepts to style and apply layouts your web page. Make your web pages adapt to a variety of device screens.

JavaScript

Learn JavaScript programming fundamentals and DOM manipulation to respond to user interaction on a web page.

What's the difference between the two courses?

Frontend Web Development Phase 1 will teach you how to build and style web pages using HTML and CSS. This course covers essential tags, layouts, and responsive design, giving you the skills to create attractive and functional websites.

Frontend Web Development Phase 2 will teach you programming fundamentals and how to add interactivity to websites with JavaScript. You'll learn key concepts like variables, functions, and event handling to create dynamic web features and improve user experience.

How Does Project_<Code> Work?

Step 1:

Register for and attend an upcoming info session.

Check the schedule above for the next available sessions and fill out the interest form if you would like to be notified via email.

Step 2:

Pass a skills assessment during the info session to be eligible for enrollment.

Please note that passing the assessment does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Step 3:

Follow email communications on how to enroll in the Project Code section of your choice.

FAQ

Are there any prerequisites?

There are no preqrequisites required for Phase 1. For Phase 2, you must pass an HTML & CSS skills assessment during a Project Code information session for the relevant cycle.

As of Fall 2026, graduating Phase 1 is no longer a requirement for Phase 2.

Will the course be taught in person or online?

This program will be offered both in-person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library and virtually via Zoom. Participants who do not have the appropriate technology to participate remotely will need to pick up devices provided to them by NYPL prior to the beginning of the program and return them after the course is finished.

What do I need in order to participate in the course?

All of the physical and digital materials needed to participate in the program, including technology and learning materials will be provided to you by NYPL’s TechConnect department. If you already own or have access to the necessary technology needed to participate (any computer and a web browser), you are more than welcome to use your own equipment.

In addition to the physical equipment and digital materials needed to participate. Learners will also need to have wifi that meets the following criteria:

An upload speed of at least 3.8Mbps and...
A download speed of at least 3.0Mbps

To test to see what your upload and download speeds are, you can use an online tool like speedtest.net to run the test and find out.
