Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rank starts at white belt and then goes blue, purple, brown, and then black. There are 4 degrees at each belt level (recognized by stripes on the belt). So for example, when you have 4 stripes on your white belt, your next promotion would be to blue belt. At NWMA, we rank our students based primarily on 2 factors: attendance and competency of skill / technique. We believe that martial arts is a personal journey and you are not going to be compared to anybody but you. There is a minimum set requirement for how many classes you must attend before you become eligible for promotion (see chart below for number of classes needed for each rank). If you are not making it into the Academy to train and improve, you will not get promoted...hopefully that makes sense to everybody. Attendance however, does not guarantee promotion, it simply makes you eligible for promotion. When a student hits the number of classes that is required for the next promotion, it will be brought to the Instructors' attention and they will have the final say if the student is ready for promotion. In the advancement from white to blue, there will be a physical test where you must demonstrate proficiency in the techniques from that curriculum. Please feel free to discuss any aspect of your rank or our policies with your Instructors. They can help guide you through the process and help you with any techniques or skills that you will need to develop to advance.
