Q&A

  • Q. Where do we park?

A. There is metered street parking that is available in front and all around the Academy. Less than one block away on Charnelton street there is a city parking garage that the first hour of parking is free, and it is free anytime after 6 pm.

  • Q. Are you guys a competitive gym?

A. Most of our students do not compete in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. However, we do have a small number of active competitors who do like to challenge themselves at local as well as national and international competitions. NWMA has had many successful competitors over the years, but it is not our primary focus, and you certainly will not be pushed to compete as often happens at other Academies.

  • Q. What if I am out of shape, inflexible, old, or all of those things?

A. NWMA believes that everybody can learn and benefit from training in Jiu-Jitsu. We work hard to create a friendly and welcoming environment where every new student is supported and treated with respect. Waiting to get in shape before you start Jiu-Jitsu is like waiting until you feel healthy to start eating better. Jiu-Jitsu will help you improve your fitness, flexibility, etc... We don't expect that you are in good shape when you get started. Our Fundamentals program starts people on their journey at their own pace.

  • Q. How often should I train?

A. That will vary person by person. Most people will want to start out with no more than 2 or 3 classes per week, and then see how they are feeling and how quickly their body starts to adjust. In general, if you can average 2 classes per week, you will be constantly learning and improving. If your body holds up to it, and you have the time to be there more often, every hour that you put in on the mat will do nothing but make you better. Our memberships are unlimited access, so you are welcome to train 7 days per week if you want!
