Getting ready for your first day of NWMA group class?
Before you leave the house make sure to read over NWMA's BJJ Rules and etiquette.
Please wear BJJ uniform with a shirt or rash-guard underneath. Any color Gi will do.
Make sure long hair is secured in a bun and your nails are trimmed.
Grab your water bottle.
Be on time so you don't miss warm-ups! They are important. We all run late sometimes, but try not to make a habit of it. Check in with instructor if you are late before joining class.
Once you arrive:
Please come in quietly as group classes run back to back.
Place your items in the locker room
Wear shoes if your off the mat and leave next to the mat, always wear shoes in the bathroom
Bow when coming onto and when exiting the mat (This is a way we show respect for the space, the arts, those who have come before us, and for our teammates).
Make sure you hit the roll sheet. Your attendance is part of rank. We hope you strive to attend at least two group classes per week.
Line up for team bow in.
During class:
Often, a "Focus Clap" will be used by the Instructor as you break to go off and practice a technique. The Instructor will count 1,2,3...then everyone claps!
Please avoid coaching your teammates. Our Instructors have been specifically trained to teach our curriculum and have many hours put into teaching the techniques the way that we want it taught. Please leave the coaching to us.
If ever a teammate is inappropriate, overly aggressive, discouraging, smells a bit funny...whatever. ALWAYS tell a coach/professor. We have systems to gently deal with guiding students to be the best training partners they can be.
If you ever feel uncomfortable always check in with a coach/professor. We can make accommodations such as not paring you with specific partners, modification of movements, or give a little extra help or an encouraging word. We are here to help you!
