Class Vision:
To provide all students with the skills they need to achieve their full potential in music and society, as well as to foster their lifelong enjoyment of music.
Class Mission:
Empower students to use music as a vehicle for self expression and stress management.
Establish clear and attainable goals for every student, using a growth mindset.
Foster communication, creativity, and problem solving skills through collaboration in music performance.
Expectations: Because they have chosen to be part of a music ensemble, music students are expected to care about more than just their personal wants and needs. Music students must care about each other and the success of the group as a whole. The following expectations are in addition to the WOMS Student Code of Conduct and the School Wide Discipline Plan included in every student’s agenda. These apply during class, on trips, and in concerts.
Student Promise:
Collaboration: I will work together with others toward our common goal during each rehearsal and performance. I will do my part to help make the group stronger.
Accountability: I will be prepared and give my best effort every day. I will follow all the expectations and procedures. I will be responsible for my learning and grow from my mistakes.
Respect: I will listen and be kind to others. I will take care of our building and materials. I will help to create a positive learning environment.
Expression: I will share my feelings in an appropriate manner without disrupting learning. Music will be the primary way I express myself in this class.
“I PROMISE TO CARE”
Grading Policy:
30% – Ensemble Skills: Professionalism, Preparation, Participation
Students’ promptness, preparedness, participation, behavior, attitude, and general contribution to the group are vital to the success of the individual student and the ensemble. Students will be evaluated each week on a rubric based on their compliance with the class procedure and expectations.
45% – Musicianship Skills: Classwork, Practice and Performance Assessments
All students are expected to practice outside of class time to reinforce their knowledge of the music. Students will set goals before they practice, keep a record of what was practiced and for how long, and evaluate their progress. Students will perform selections for the teacher. Performance assessments will be graded using a rubric to judge the student’s ability to demonstrate mastery of the learning goals. In addition, students will complete classwork to practice and review the skills outlined in the learning goals.
25% – Concert Etiquette: Participation in concerts is mandatory. Students will be graded using a rubric.
Students are expected to arrive early to every concert at a time designated by the director, and leave only when dismissed by the director once the concert is over and cleaned up. Absences are unexcused, except in cases of illness, emergency, or significant family events (ex. weddings or funerals). A conflict excuse request from the parents must be turned in to the director one week prior to the concert. In cases of emergency, an excuse request must be received within two days of the student’s return to school. Extracurricular events, homework, or lack of transportation are not acceptable excuses, so please plan accordingly.
Students who are excused from a performance will be required to complete an alternate assignment project for full credit, which will be graded in place of the performance. Students who have an unexcused absence from a performance will still be required to complete an alternate assignment project for partial credit.
Communication:
Please contact Mr. Boys if you are not receiving regular email updates.
Students will use Google Classroom to receive and submit assignments. Parents are encouraged to register as guardians for all classes.
Grades will be updated regularly using ProgressBook.
A Google Calendar of WOMS music events is available on the web site. Please subscribe to receive notifications.
Instrument Selection:
Every effort will be made to make sure that each student is assigned an instrument that they will enjoy and succeed at playing. As part of a band, consideration must also be given to the number of each instrument. Like in any sport, only so many people can play any given position.
Students should keep a 2nd choice in mind, in case there are too many students playing their 1st choice.
Students with prior experience on an instrument will be given precedence over new students.
The teacher may require a placement audition if there are too many requests for the same instrument.
