Book Recommendation and Review Sites
Developed and maintained by former public library children's instructor and research specialist Barb Langridge, A Book and a Hug helps readers find their reading "personality type". Readers are encouraged to take either a basic or advanced ten question quiz that helps them to categorize their reading preferences into one of four "types". Ms. Langridge enlists the aide of many librarians to recommend and tag books for her book lists. This is a fun way to leverage the power of technology into a tool to help students find books that align with their reading preferences with the aim of helping them to become (or remain) lifelong readers.
This is a fun teen book recommendation site developed and maintained by HarperCollins Publishers. In addition to book recommendations, there are author interviews, entertaining quizzes and contests, videos, and links to supported social networking feeds. A blog binds it all together. This is a wonderful site for booklovers of all ages!
Fantastic Fiction provides bibliographies for over 30,000 authors and reviews for over 350,000 books. It is searchable by author and/or title and provides international purchasing information and pricing, as well as Amazon links.
Goodreads is a social book recommendation site and is an excellent way to get connected with other readers and writers. There are extensive booklists and, as a registered user, you have the ability to participate in book discussion groups, meet-the-author events, and other activities for avid readers. You can create and share your own book recommendation lists as well as create lists of books that you have read or still want to read.
New Stuff for Teens highlights the latest teen reads and the option to place a hold on each title. Go to Teenspace to read peer reviews, book recommendations, and more. Take time to explore the many offerings for teens at your local branch library.
Developed by the designers at Thoughtplay Ltd., What Should I Read Next? is a popular book recommendation search engine. Simply type in a book title and the search engine will produce a list of books that are of a similar literary genre. There is an Amazon link to title details and purchasing information next to each entry. Register your email address if you want to create and save booklists for future use.
The current award winner and finalists are listed with book summaries and reviews. There are links to previous winners going back to 2010.
Developed every five years, this list highlights books that challenge readers and stimulate interest in a variety of subjects within various academic disciplines. This is a list useful for college-bound students, teachers, librarians, and parents.
These are suggested reads for teens who, for whatever reason, tend to dislike reading. Picks are diverse and high-interest, geared toward developing a desire to read for pleasure.
This is YALSA's "teen choice" list. Teens nominate and vote on their favorite reads from the previous year.
Library Links
The Ohio Digital Library allows Ohio residents to check out eBooks and audiobooks onto a variety of devices. Most books are offered in a variety of compatible formats, based on the device being used (e.g. Kindle, ePub, Overdrive, etc.). Use of the device on tablets and/or smartphones requires the download of the free Overdrive app. Simply search for the title, select the format, select the library for which you hold a library card, and check out using your library card. Note: The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has its own selection of Overdrive books, so it does not show up on the list of libraries through The Ohio Digital Library site. PLCH digital books must be accessed through their eBranch.
