Coil - 3 variation coil vessel

Students learn to build with coils - like long snakes of clay. Students practice making coils that are even thicknesses and making structures that change direction. Students must make 3 even coils then build a structure going straight up and down, angling out, and then angling in. When students are confident in coil building, we discuss different ways to use coils.

Different coil techniques:

  • horizontal
  • vertical
  • spirals
  • dots/balls
  • leaving spaces
  • adding texture to the coils before rolling

Students use at least 3 of these different techniques to create a vessel that demonstrates variation and texture.
