Performance indicators are the most important components of your role plays with judges. Performance indicators are used to measure and evaluate your knowledge in certain skills relating to your career cluster. On the front of every roleplay situation, a list of 4-7 performance indicators, depending on your event, are listed. In your role play, you are expected to talk about each of these indicators and how they relate to the situation at hand. After the judge has listened to your presentation or role-play, the judge will evaluate how well you incorporated your knowledge of the four to seven performance indicators into your presentation. The majority of your score is made up of your knowledge of the performance indicators. See examples below:

The other major component of role plays are 21st century skills. These are skills that judges expect you to exemplify throughout your presentation or role play. The main skills you are expected to show are to use effective reasoning and systems thinking, clear communication, creativity, and critical thinking to answer questions effectively. The 21st century skills involved in role plays are shown below:
Out of all of the 21st-century skills, competitors often struggle with the creativity aspect. The best advice that can be given here is to be unique. Judges often get bored of seeing the same roleplay over and over again, so it would be to your benefit if you try to set yourself apart from the competition. The best way to be unique in your role play is to take advantage of visual aids. During your prep time, it is recommended that you prepare visual aids, such as graphs/charts or a drawing, to better explain the performance indicators and give the judge something to look at. This not only makes what you are saying clearer, but also makes you more creative in the eyes of the judge, leading to a higher overall score.
