Here’s What You Need to Know About Volunteering — and When a Badge Is Required
At South CTA, we welcome all parent and community volunteers. Some opportunities require a CCSD badge, while others do not. Here’s how to tell the difference:
You can volunteer without a badge if you are:
Working under direct supervision of a staff member
Helping with events, check-in tables, or other roles where you're not alone with students
These are great ways to get started if you're new or have limited availability.
A CCSD volunteer badge is required if you will:
Be alone with students (even briefly)
Chaperone field trips
Volunteer on a regular basis (4+ times/month)
Mentor or support classrooms unsupervised
To get badged, follow the steps below. The process includes a background check and fingerprinting and can take up to 50 days.
If you’ve never been a CCSD volunteer before, here’s how to get started:
Apply online:
Scroll down and look for “Volunteer”
You’ll see a list of available schools and volunteer positions.
Find “South Career Technical Academy – Volunteer” Click the red “Apply” button and complete the application
Be sure to enter your correct contact information and follow all prompts.
Wait for fingerprint instructions via email
You’ll receive next steps, including how to complete your background check and where to go for fingerprinting.
⏳ This process can take up to 50 days, so we recommend starting early.
Once your badge arrives from CCSD, bring it to our front office and complete the required steps below.
If you already have a badge and were fingerprinted in the last 5 years, follow these steps after school starts to extend your volunteer status:
Bring your current badge to the front office
Watch the two required training videos:
Complete the acknowledgment form linked in the videos
Visit our office manager to update your badge expiration and receive an extension sticker
