Coming soon....
All 5th-graders who were present on Monday, November 3rd, attended the Magnet Middle School presentation in the MPR. Students were given information to take home and share with their parents. We highly encourage parents to discuss these middle school options with their child, as they offer excellent opportunities for students to learn while pursuing their passions.

Basic Magnet Middle School Info:
To attend a magnet school, an application needs to be completed.
The CCSD Magnet Schools website (https://magnet.ccsd.net/) has information about applying, transportation information** (see below), their selection process, etc.
All interested 5th-grade students are encouraged to apply with parent help! It takes only a few minutes!!
The application deadline is Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, at 3:00 pm.
TIP: It's better to apply early so that you can "submit it and forget it". Don't wait!
In addition, it is better to apply and get accepted, and, if you change your mind later, to turn down the acceptance. It is much more difficult (and in some cases impossible) to get accepted later if you miss the deadline and wish you had applied after all.
(Late applications are sometimes accepted at magnet schools if seats remain open, but students are more likely to get accepted and get their preferred magnet school choice if they apply by January 13th.)
**Students can apply to any magnet school they wish. However, transportation for Jenkins students is provided only to the schools listed below. If your child applies to one of the many other magnet schools not listed below, you will need to provide transportation.
STEM: Mike O'Callaghan i3 Learn Academy
Performing Arts: KO Knudson Academy of the Arts
International Baccalaureate (Global Studies): Roy W. Martin Middle School and International Baccalaureate Middle School Programme
Leadership: (District-wide) Robert O. Gibson Leadership Academy

CCSD Magnet School Fair
The next magnet school fair is SATURDAY, Nov. 15th, 2025, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at Rancho High School.
Kindergarten Lessons:
Kindergarten students will learn about personal space, which will deepen their self-awareness, social awareness, and responsible decision-making. We will read "Personal Space Camp" by Julia Cook, discuss the concepts presented in the book, and do an activity to reinforce what they learn.
1st and 2nd Grade Lessons:
Students will read "Clark the Shark" by Bruce Hale. Students will discuss what self-control means and ways they can stay in control and make good choices, even when they are upset. We will make a shark-themed flip book to go with the story, highlighting ways to "stay cool" in school, in the classroom, at lunch, and at recess.
3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Lessons:
Each class will have two lessons this month. One lesson will focus on gratitude. We will define gratitude as:
Being grateful, thankful
Giving or showing thanks
Showing respect to the people and things in our lives already
And we make a note that it is something we must learn and therefore practice if we want to get better at it (just like spelling words or math facts).
We will read the story "How Full is Your Bucket" by Tom Rath. We will do a whole-class activity in which students take turns identifying things they are grateful for, then complete a flap-book reflecting on the activity, their experiences, and the specific things they are thankful for and why.
The other lesson will focus on the stress response and what happens to our brains when we experience stress (or big emotions). We will learn about three specific parts of the brain— the PFC (Pre-Frontal Cortex), the Hippocampus, and the Amygdala —and their functions: decision-making and learning, memory, and keeping us safe/controlling our emotions. Students learn that when they are in danger (or perceived danger—like moments of stress), their amygdala reacts, causing the PFC to function less efficiently. This is why, when they are scared, sad, angry, or excited (or in danger), it's harder to make decisions and learn. We will also discuss ways to help the amygdala calm down by using coping skills.
