August Class Lessons - Meet the School Counselor
The Panorama SEL Survey
August being "Welcome Back to School" month
Meet the Counselor Lessons
During the first three weeks of school, I visit each classroom to introduce myself and explain my role here on campus.
1st - 5th and Intermediate Autism: We also read a book titled "Feelings are Like Farts" (by Christopher Willard and Tara Wosiski, illustrated by Toshiki Nakamura). This book is not only silly, but it's also an excellent metaphor for helping students normalize and understand that big feelings, just like farts, are normal and everyone experiences them. Both can be awkward and need to be released, but at the appropriate time and place. It also helps them understand that both can be unreliable and, as the authors state, "just like farts, feelings will pass".
Kindergarten and Primary Autism: We did an activity where we built Mrs. Potato Head, one piece at a time, and I explained how I use my senses (what they are learning about right now) to care for students and help keep them safe. I use my eyes to look out for them and see them for who they are. I use my ears to hear all of the kind things they say to each other. I use my nose to breathe, especially when I am sad, angry, or frustrated. I use my words to speak kindly, help students work with others, and advocate for them. I use my hands and arms to give high-fives, fist-bumps, and hugs. I use my feet to get from classroom to classroom so I can be where I am needed.
Panorama Survey
The Panorama SEL Survey also starts this month. This survey is only for 4th- and 5th-grade students. A letter informing parents about the purpose of the survey is being sent home. A copy of the Panorama Parent Letter is linked here: (English, Spanish)
4th-graders should have taken their letter home on August 19th.
5th-graders will be given their letters on August 28th.
Mrs. King
School Counselor
Dear Patriots,
Welcome back to the start of another great year at Jenkins Elementary School! My name is Mrs. King, and I'm the school counselor at Jenkins. I have been here since the fall of 2021 and am delighted to continue working with students, families, and staff.
As a school counselor, I work closely with all stakeholders to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses our students' academic, social-emotional, and career/college development. In this capacity, I provide several services to complement our program.
Classroom Lessons (K-5) — Lessons are preventative in nature and we highlight various topics throughout the year. I visit each K-2 class once per month and each 3-5 class once or twice monthly.
Individual Counseling*— I work with students one-on-one, using a brief, solution-focused approach. I see students based on parent, teacher, or student referrals.
Social/Emotional Learning — These are skills or strategies built into classroom lessons or individual counseling to support students' ability to constructively solve their problems.
Consultations with teachers, parents, and administrators
504 Plan Coordination
Basic Needs — We can provide backpacks (until we run out) and basic school supplies for any students who need them. I can also help connect families to organizations that provide emergency or ongoing basic needs (such as food and/or clothing).
Special Events — I try to be visible and available during most special events such as Meet & Greet, Open House, Trunk or Treat, Book Fairs, Literacy/Specialist nights, etc. I even run the Crochet Club!
*As a school counselor, I must honor student confidentiality. While you may not be notified every time a student requests to meet with me or is referred to me by a teacher, you can be reassured that I will contact you if it becomes a regular habit or if you need to be made aware of specific concerns related to safety, development, or well-being.
Please get in touch with me at kingmm@nv.ccsd.net or (702)799-3200, ext 4301, with any questions, concerns, or needs so that we can work together to help your student be successful at Jenkins!
Thank you,
Mrs. King (she, her, hers)
