HOCO

On Friday, October 20, we hosted our annual HOCO assembly. Every year, STUCO runs the assembly and has many different categories such as performances, games, club walks, and homecoming royalty nominations. The clubs that were a part of the club walk were SOL, Cheer, BSU, HOSA, Skills USA, Archery, and more. I was a part of the walk being a cheerleader. We ran across the gym floor, which wasn’t intended, but we had no choice. We had to make it back into the gym to grab our poms and head into the weight room, where we would soon be called out of later.
Mr. Lange carried the first performance by singing the National Anthem and it was amazing. Next, the JROTC Color Guard presented their flags and respect. Then we (the cheerleaders) came out and performed with two cheers and a dance. It was pretty loud so it was hard to hear our captains' calls and our music, but we still did it and it was fun. Then, STUCO continued the assembly with some games and they were fun to watch. At the end, our student body presidents announced the homecoming royalty nominations for each grade level. We got many compliments from other students on our dance and cheers. Overall, the assembly was tons of fun and I can’t wait for next year.
On Saturday, October 21, we had the annual night of the year: The Homecoming Dance. We had a great mix of different genres of music. There were snacks and drinks as well. We used the entire quad to host this event and it worked out perfectly. I had so much fun with my friends and took many videos and pictures.
I was a little hesitant about going in the first place, but I’m really glad that I attended. I mainly danced the whole night, which sounded like the best idea, until it wasn’t. That was the night when I learned that heels are not for me. I even thought about dancing barefoot multiple times. Other than that, I had an amazing time with my friends and I will definitely attend next year.
JROTC

Last year the JROTC program went through many exciting events. One of our very first events was the open house where our Armed drill team performed for our new and upcoming freshman. Another important event during 2023 was the Veterans Day parade in Moapa, Nevada. Our entire battalion matched in honor of our Veterans and other first respondents. That parade became a big success as we honored the ones who fought and are fighting for our freedom. Although our school does not contain sports 2023 highlights, we have drill team highlights. The JROTC program consists of many different teams, the PT (Physical Training) team, The armed team, the unarmed team, and our multiple color guard teams.
Each team performs in different competitions depending on what their specialty is. Our PT team competes in physical training created by the actual Army physical fitness. The Unarmed teams compete in marching and facing movements in routines created to test the knowledge and precision of the members. Our armed team does the same thing the unarmed does however the rifles are added, containing rifle movements to their routine, and finally, our color guard teams compete with the presentation of the flag. Each competition starts on a Saturday our teams come to school around 6-6:30 am to load the buses and get some last-minute practice. Depending on how far away the school we are competing at is, the busses are loading around 7-7:30 am. We have multiple color guard teams and in 2023 we had two unarmed teams, team A and team B. Each competition is hosted by a different school, in 2023 we went to, Bonanza High School, Las Vegas High School, and our very own Veterans Tribute.
HACKING

Students were going back to school from the weekend on a Monday and everyone was tired as usual. On the next day: Tuesday, October 17, 2023, when students came back first period, no one could log in to their Chromebooks. The teachers had no idea what was going on until they got an email shortly after the bell rang. Not being able to log in turned into a big deal after a few days because so many students having trouble with their Chromebooks. Teachers started sending small groups of students to the Student Union to see our computer techs, Mr. Fishman and Mr. Rodriguez. When the students got there they started to reset their passwords. It was not easy as the Student Union became packed with so many students. It was a mess for a while until there was a system put into place.

People were saying it was a hacker that was doing this but there was no real proof of that. This was happening all over the district. Further on in the week, students and staff were still having issues and teachers started teaching old style using paper. At a certain point, we could all log in again at school, but not at home. Most students were happy that this happened because of all the stress they were under. The hacker incident also led to much work being completed during school hours since students could not access Chromebooks at home.
After a few days, some students and teachers could not log in to their school accounts at home but others could. Most students were sad when this was over because they didn’t want to go back to doing work. By that time, everyone had already reset their passwords. This topic has been one that many students remember as the best time and one of the best things to happen this school year. Getting back to the routine of how classes usually went, was difficult for many. In the end, everything worked out for everybody and we all got back to our routine at school.
