Instructors of an online class should have daily synchronous sessions with Elementary (K-5) and 3 weekly synchronous (live) for Secondary students (6-12) sessions through Google Meets. Attendance will be submitted on Mondays from the previous week. Each secondary teacher will be expected to have 2 hours of office time during the week for assisting students and parents. All meeting times, Google Meet links, and office hours should be posted to your Canvas Home page. Teachers should also provide specific and meaningful feedback to students in a timely manner which should be 2-3 days after the submission of the assignment.
Teachers will create a positive and constructive digital environment for students to learn. This includes creating engaging lessons and assignment for students to learn from. To increase engagement in secondary lessons use projects to increase student interactivity with the content or effective use of small groups in Google meet sessions. For elementary lessons keep energy levels high and incorporate more movement. When developing lessons make sure that they are in a similar format to give students an established routine which students respond well to (Castelo, 2020). In all grades make sure to set behavioral and academic expectations for your classrooms to have the most successful engagement (Foght, 2020). Students with inappropriate clothing, language or paraphernalia that is not allowed in a school building will be reprimanded and information given to the appropriate personnel for your school. Assistant Principals will develop and deliver a more detailed list in your opening meetings at the beginning of the year. Due to the flexibility in the schedule all assignments should come with sufficient directions to complete the assignment on their own.
All teachers are expected to send out a weekly email with updates on student progress in regards to grades and behavior. This provides transparency to our parents about what is going on in the classroom and will promote parent engagement which in turn should improve student engagement as well (Kipp and Rice, 2020). All teachers should respond to parent and student emails no more than 24 hours during the school week. Additional communication is at the discretion of the instructor and their school.
