Stations can differentiate instruction and support every learner, plus allows for teacher support via small group instruction. When thinking about rolling out stations, a strong culture with clear expectations and student ownership is key to effective implementation. Rolling out strong routines can help you use the time more efficiently, while also giving students clear expectations around behaviors and actions throughout the allotted time. Recipe cards, outlining steps and procedures, are a great way to provide guidance and instruction in a station rotation. Playlists

Playlists give students choice over when, how and what they do to reach an academic objective. Playlist-based instruction can provide students with greater choice and motivation while giving teachers more time to provide individualized support to students who need it most. Playlists can incorporate both offline and online digital learning. When using playlists, teachers have more time to do what’s most important – check in with students, lead small-group instruction, and build relationships.

There are several digital tools that can be used to create playlists. One tool can be found at goformative.com which offers free accounts and integrates with Google Classroom. Or, click the playlist icon to view a template playlist that you can copy to your google drive.

Menus and Choice Boards

Menus and Choice Boards are an incredibly effective way to differentiated learning by giving students a menu or choice of learning activities. These graphic organizers allow students to choose how they will learn a concept. They can be organized so students need to finish one square before moving to the next, they can be random, or can be organized in a specific way. They are an easy way to differentiate some of the ideas you may not have had time for in the regular lesson and can be created in a variety of styles and mediums, from hyperdocs, Tic-Tac-Toe boards, Must Do - May Do checklists, and menus.
