Episode 4

You have done an amazing job of following along with us! You've learned to practice calming your body and to turn your attention to your breathing. You've learned how to use your breathing to anchor your thoughts and hold your mind steady when distractions threaten to steal your attention away. In Episode 3 you began to practice turning your attention to a small object, noticing details, not judging, just looking.

This episode will guide you through a simple check-in. This is a great way to end or begin your day and it is a great example of how you can quickly and easily use the skills you've been practicing.

Now we come to an important fact about mindfulness that many people miss. Mindfulness is not a thing that you can just learn about and then expect to see the benefits of. The real benefits of mindfulness come only when you are practicing, when you are using the skills that you have learned.

Imagine you are hungry. It's been a long day at school or work, you are almost done and your tummy is growling. You get home, walk to the fridge, open the door and there is a plate of your most favorite food sitting right in front of you. Pizza? Ice cream? Mac & Cheese? Whatever it is, your mouth is watering and you can't wait to dig in. Mindfulness is like that plate of food. To get the benefits of that food you have to get it out and actually eat it. You can't just let it sit on the plate and "know" that it is there. "Knowing" about mindfulness, but not practicing is like "knowing" about food, but not eating it. Eat up! Don't let that delicious food go to waste.

We suggest returning to the Mindfulness page to try some of the previous episodes again now that you have more experience. Thanks again for joining along in our practice.

Stay safe, have fun, and get outside!
