Outdoor education is a mainstay of the middle school years. For many students, this is a defining experience in their growth and development and we are heartbroken that so many students have missed out on this experience due to COVID-19. Many of you have scheduled outdoor education experiences set to take place in the fall of 2020, but due to proposed CDC guidelines and uncertainty, these types of field trips are seeming less and less possible. We have a solution for you.
Since March 20, 2020 Nuhop has been providing at-home outdoor education through it’s free-to-access webpage. This service has served over 16,000 students across the globe who have completed nearly 50,000 outdoor education lessons in their own backyards! Nuhop’s work has been recognized across the U.S. by the nation’s leading environmental and middle school education organizations including (but not limited to):
Children and Nature Network
North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE)
National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF)
EarthEcho
Environmental Education Council of Ohio (EECO)
Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Education (PAEE)

Starting in June 2020, Nuhop will be providing a premium customized at-home/at-school outdoor education experience for new and existing clients. This premium service is meant to provide districts and teachers a tailored outdoor education experience for their students that can be deployed regardless of the CDC and state-based health and safety guidelines. In other words, you don’t have to cancel camp. It might just be a little different.
Participation in the customized experience will include the following premiums:
Customized web portal with district specific branding and URL.
District selected lessons and activities that take the guesswork out of activity selection for students, parents, and teachers.
Teachers are provided with all post-experience assessment data and given the opportunity to fine tune or change quiz questions to meet their specific needs.
An opportunity to add social-emotional curricular experiences into a digital-experiential format (i.e. digital team-building).
Ability to request and add new content to the customized platform to meet specific district and curricular needs.
Daily digital-live meet-ups with Nuhop counselors and staff that can serve as morning meetings, warm-ups, energizers, and information sessions for students, parents, and teachers.
Customized district specific camp memorabilia which can include t-shirts, water bottles, backpacks, stickers, etc.
Nuhop has created a version of online outdoor education that keeps students engaged with their own natural world and emphasizes a progression of learning that closely aligns with a traditional face-to-face experience. Rather than focus on the “online” aspect of the curriculum, Nuhop has changed their vision for the program to emphasize the “digitally facilitated” nature of the experience. Sure, computers are used, but more significantly, students are participating in outdoor education in the outdoors, even when the traditional models are not possible. Nuhop has an extensive curriculum to choose from with new content being added each week. Our current menu of courses include the following:
If you have an outdoor education program that is at risk of being cancelled this fall, give us a call so we can help you preserve that life-changing experience for your students. We have given up so much already due to COVID-19, let’s try to preserve what we can!
