Distance Learning

Considerations & Resources

NSSEO e-Learning Plan

There are some circumstances in which NSSEO might elect to use e-Learning days, for example, when classroom or school closures are necessary because of high pandemic case numbers or inclement weather.

During e-learning, students will engage in learning from home to maintain continuity of learning. An e-learning day is a full day of learning and, therefore, an emergency day would not need to be made up at the end of the year. It is the intention of NSSEO that e-learning will be used for some, but not all, emergency days.

Tips for success in distance learning

1. Balance synchronous and asynchronous activities for each lesson or unit, use each intentionally to achieve your learning objectives

Asynchronous vs Synchronous

2. Break up longer lessons into smaller chunks, mixing time to watch a video or demonstration (8-10 minutes max) with time to interact, practice, and apply the skills

  • Start with tools and activities that you and your students are already familiar with

  • When planning to use technology, remember that less can be more. You don’t need to be using a huge range of different tools.

4. Create a single Landing Page for your class so that parents and students have everything in one place (examples: Google Site, Bitmoji Classroom, Google Doc)

5. Create class and individual student schedules that are posted and predictable for all students, caregivers, and staff

6. Provide parents and students with clear directions that include what each activity is and details for how it should be completed

7. Establish and teach routines and behavioral expectations for all types of Distance Learning activities

Most importantly, take care of yourself

Go offline at the end of the day, take breaks, keep moving, eat well, drink water, take care of yourself...

we couldn’t do this without you!!
