Have you heard of the game that’s been dubbed “the new Uno”? The newest game taking the internet by storm, Among Us, features astronauts trying to fix their spaceship while an imposter tries to sabotage their trip home. If the crewmates complete all of their tasks before the imposter takes them out, then they win! If the imposter manages to take out all of the crewmates, then that person wins. In meetings that are called by the push of a button, players can throw the supposed imposter off of the ship. Players, be careful, though, and make sure you work well with your teammates! You wouldn’t want to vote off the wrong person.
Among Us can be downloaded onto your laptop or on your phone so you can play whenever and wherever you want. You can play with friends in a private room, or play with new people from across the country. You are also able to chat with your friends during meetings in order to deduce who the imposter is. Among Us has become very popular with live streamers and YouTubers, and it’s currently one of the most popular games on Steam. Among Us, although released in 2018, became well known this year due to famous streamers such as Pewdiepie, Jacksepticeye, Ninja, Dream, and TommyInnit.
Oddly enough, there is lore to this seemingly simple and fun game. According to Game Theory, there is no real winning. The game developers themselves made it clear that the imposter is a shape-shifting alien posing as a crewmate. Much like the movie The Thing, the imposter is trying to spread its kind to the human race and take over. In the description of the game, the developers wrote that a player’s job as a crewmate is to “attempt to hold [their] spaceship together and return back to civilization” (Steam Among Us Description). The spaceship is headed to a homebase, or a home planet of some sort. Unfortunately, what the Crewmates believe is a success will actually be their downfall. Making it back to their base on one of the maps, Mira HQ, gives the imposter exactly what it wants: a chance to increase its population and take over. The Crewmates couldn’t have known that this would happen, and because of this accident, the good guys end up spreading the evil of the Imposter among us.
