Grade Point Average (GPA)
1. Grades for all subjects for which credit or partial credit is given are used in computing GPA, excluding summer school, external credit, internships, independent study, and courses offered on a pass/fail basis. Students choosing to exclude a non-core, non-required course from their GPA (e.g., Band) will be required to complete the proper form (GPA Opt-Out) within the first two weeks of the course.
2. Although Newington High School transcripts will show an accurate reflection of a student’s course enrollment and performance, if a course is completed a second time for credit recovery purposes, the original grade of F (equivalent to 0.00 quality GPA points) will be calculated into the overall GPA.
3. Students transferring from other schools will be awarded credit in alignment with Newington and State graduation requirements. Grades will be recorded as “P” (Pass) and are not calculated in the weighted GPA. Every attempt will be made to connect credit earned from differing systems in other states/countries with those of Newington High School/Connecticut.
Class Rank and Determination of Valedictorian and Salutatorian
In the absence of class rank, the School Counseling Department will:
Include in college application materials a GPA distribution chart with each student’s transcript, in the form of a school profile.
No class rank will be reported to colleges, institutions, parents or students unless (a) there is a request from an institution's admission officer or (b) there is a request from an institution awarding the scholarship informing us that to withhold class rank would be harmful to the student; in which case, a percentile may be shared directly to that institution.
A valedictorian and salutatorian will be named for each graduating class.
The valedictorian at Newington High School is that member of the graduating class who has achieved the highest Grade Point Average (GPA). The GPA is a cumulative average based on seven semesters of academic work (e.g., grade nine through the first semester of senior year.)
The salutatorian at Newington High School is that member of the graduating class who has achieved the second highest Grade Point Average (GPA). The GPA is a cumulative average based on seven semesters of academic work (e.g., grade nine through the first semester of senior year.)
Students who transfer in with credits from their previous high school are not eligible to qualify as Valedictorian or Salutatorian.
Students who accelerate (complete four years of high school in three) are not eligible to qualify for valedictorian or salutatorian.
