This course examines the tools that writers use to convey themes and to evoke emotion from readers as compared to the tools and techniques that filmmakers and directors use to convey those same themes, evoke emotions from the audience, and provide marketable entertainment. Students will read and analyze short stories, novels, and plays and juxtapose them with the films made of the literary work. Students will learn to “read” a film by analyzing the techniques of cinematography and mise-en-scene. The focus of the course is on critical reading and critical viewing to compare the resulting effects on reader and audience. Both research and writing are incorporated into assignments.
