Students in English 9 are exposed to literary works organized by themes in a variety of genres, including the novel, short stories, drama, poetry, and informational text. Writing instruction focuses on essay development, organization of details, revision, and application of grammar skills with a focus on literary analysis and thesis-driven informative essays. Students develop reading strategies to handle more complex texts and progress to developing literary analysis skills to comprehend and appreciate literature. Information literacy skills are introduced and developed through structured library research activities. At the honors level, students are expected to read texts independently at a more rigorous level and pace; writing instruction focuses on increasing sophistication.
