The focus of this course is on the development of writing, speaking and listening, and literary analysis skills. Students will read classic and contemporary works of literature dealing with topics and themes related to evil and violence including discussion of individuals and groups who worked and succeeded in overcoming such obstacles. Writing instruction, practice, and assessment will focus on three types of writing throughout the course of the year: informative, argument, and narrative. Instruction and practice in mechanics and usage, as well as research, will be included throughout the course. Students will explore college admission application essay writing, developing and editing several drafts of a personal essay. At the honors level, students will read longer and more sophisticated texts at a faster pace and more independent level.
