Students in English 10 read selected works by American authors and examine how these voices and themes reflect the changing cultural and social values of America. Students are required to examine, discuss, and analyze literary works by classic American authors from specific literary periods with identifiable styles, ideas, and conventions. Writing instruction focuses on helping students effectively organize their ideas, use persuasive and rhetorical techniques, and edit and revise to produce thesis-driven informative and argument essays which convey complex ideas clearly and accurately. At the honors level, students are expected to read texts independently at a more rigorous level and pace; writing instruction focuses on increasing sophistication.
