This survey of British literature begins with the study of the late Renaissance and continues through the study of the Victorian Era. The emphasis of the course is on the literature of British writers in given time periods, linking the context in which the work was written to the themes and style of the author. Students will read works by Shakespeare and Swift, as well as by Romantic poets and Victorian novelists. Close reading, research, and literary criticism are the foundation of the course, leading to presentations and class discussions of typical themes and stylistic characteristics of the author and work.
