What is AFJROTC?
• Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC)
• An academic class that meets every day
• AFJROTC is: a citizenship and leadership program
• AFJROTC mission statement:
• “To develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.”
• AFJROTC uses Air Force principals and techniques to accomplish our mission
• Any student is eligible to take AFJROTC
• 9th grade students will be at the high school for 1st & 2nd period, then return by bus to the middle school for the remainder of the school day
What AFJROTC isn’t
• Part of military recruiting
• Instructors are retired USAF members employed by the school district
• Instructors are not military recruiters or part of the military recruiting process
• There is NO obligation to join any military branch because a student takes JROTC
Extra-curricular activities
Must take one of the classes to participate in these. Participation is not mandatory
• Military Ball
• Annual formal dinner and dance
• Color Guards
• Home football games, Philly Union, senior nights, community events
• Competitive drill team
• At least one competition per year
• Orienteering
• How to use a map and compass
• At least one competition per year
• Aviation

A deeper look at what is learned in Science of Flight – visual and instrument navigation
• Raider Team
• Physical fitness competition
• Options for many others, depends on student interest
• Competitive teams for: cyber security, spacecraft design, academic and general military knowledge
• Social Activities
• Things we have done recently: bowling, Sky Zone, ice skating, dodgeball, beginning of school year and end of school year party
• Multiple field trips each year (locations vary each year)
• Aviation museums, Valley Forge park, Washington DC . . .
• Every 2-3 years France or Hawaii!
What are the benefits?
• A science or social studies credit depending on the class
• This makes us sound like recruiters . . .
• If you complete 3 years of JROTC you get advanced pay grade if you enlist
• College scholarship for AFROTC
• 100% tuition + $10k for on campus room & board
• Competitive, only 100 per year nationally
• 2024 a North Penn student received one
• Opportunities for flight scholarship
• Competitive program, only 250 per year nationally
• 8 week summer program at Universities across US
• AF pays for travel, room & board, and all flying
• Worth about $20k
• All flying & ground training to get a pilot license
• 2023 3 North Penn cadets received this, 2025 2 selected
• Only class in high school with a multiyear leadership curriculum
• Only aviation class at the high school!
• Science of Flight helps with getting a private pilot license
• At North Penn there is a strong focus on community service
• Over 2000 hours each school year
• Color Guards, community events
• This helps with college applications
• Leadership opportunities
• Attention to detail and organizational skills
• Gain experiences that helps with college applications and in jobs
• If you go into the work force, or military, you will be well ahead of your peers
What classes are available?
• Science or Social Studies credit
• 4 different classes
• Frontiers of Aviation (science credit)
• Science of Flight (science credit)
• Aerospace Science (science credit)
• Global Studies (social studies credit)
• Each class has 2 components:
• Aerospace Science 50%
• Not to be confused with the class of the same name
• Science or history curriculum
• Leadership Education 50%

• 9th graders limited to Frontiers of Aviation, 10th-12th grade can take any course
• Global Studies is recommended for 12th grade students because it is a social studies credit and can fulfill part of the senior social studies requirement
