Windblowers Cup

Mr Rolfe

This week, we hosted our 10th annual Windblowers Cup presentation evening, during which trophies were awarded to girls in Years 5 and 6 who excelled in our 2023 competition.  Everyone performed exceptionally well, demonstrating true mastery in their discipline.  The audience was entertained with a truly diverse range of music selected by the girls from the 16th century to modern day, and BOLTON were crowned house music champions with an impressive 85 points!

Parent social and networking event

Dear fellow NGHS parents and carers,

The school has generously agreed to let us host a coffee morning on Wednesday 6 December from 8:30-9:30am, in the Dining Hall.  Please join us to meet other parents and carers from our Infant, Junior and Senior Schools, and to welcome new families to our school community.

All are welcome - there's no need to book!

We hope this will be one of many parent community events.  If you cannot make it this time but would like to see more (or different) parent events, please send your suggestions to Mrs Jelena Krzanicki (Y2 & Y6 mum) at jkrzanicki@me.com.

RAINBOWS and PASIC

We recently received these lovely letters from Rainbows and PASIC which we're pleased to share with the families who so kindly supported last May's SPONSORED SPELL - which took place shortly after the tenth anniversary of the passing of our former pupil, Rose Whittle.

Thank you for everything that you do to support your daughters with regular spelling practice at home - this annual fundraiser is a great way for them to demonstrate progress, positivity and resilience by having a go and aiming high, whilst helping children and families who find themselves coping with difficult times.

Asteroid Hunters at Cineworld

We are very much looking forward to this STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) opportunity - the whole of Key Stage 2 visiting Cineworld together to watch an IMAX screening of Asteroid Hunters on Wednesday 22nd November.

Narrated by the British Star Wars actor Daisy Ridley, this visually stunning scientific documentary examines the threat that asteroids pose to planet Earth, delving the ways that scientists all over the world are working together to keep us safe.

Using state-of-the-art 3D technology to breathe life into outer space and create an immersive experience for the audience, the filmmakers explore the birth of our solar system, the positive effects that asteroids have brought to our planet and the various ways in which we can prepare for our future survival.

BBC COUNTRYFILE RAMBLE 2023

The big one!

Walking for Pudsey Bear!

Well done to everyone who helped us to clock up an amazing collective 940 pupil and staff miles for our ongoing Sheriff's Challenge (see Miss Abbott's article in last week's Spark)!
This year's Countryfile Ramble saw girls of all ages walking between 0.6 and 6.3 miles - a monumental team effort which has generated £1400 in pledges for Children in Need from our generous families - THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Highlights of the ramble included scenic stretches along the Beeston Canal and River Trent, and an al fresco picnic lunch at the picturesque Canalside Heritage Centre - a lovely stopover which we recommend for family walks and cycle rides.  Our youngest girls also enjoyed seeing a working lock and the many boats moored around it.

Thanks go to the many staff who supported this project - especially those who volunteered time on their days off or even came out of retirement - and to Nottingham Express Transit (NET) who provided over 130 complimentary return tram fares.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

Mrs Braud

Our Percussion Club kicked off Anti-Bullying Week on Monday with a spectacular accompaniment to the Andy and the Odd Socks theme tune to  Make a Noise and stand up to bullying.   This week’s focus has been on 'banter' and how it can sometimes turn sour and become unfriendly: it can turn into bullying.  Across the school in PSHE lessons, we have been standing up to bullying through discussions, poetry (see below), and art - and on Tuesday, Year 6 joined our GDST family of schools online to meet Dr Zoe Williams and discuss her latest book, Grow Girl.

Name-caller

School-hater

Hard life-endurer

Not everyone’s lives are the same,

Some are hard so it’s not them to blame,

They bully people - that’s such a shame,

But if you kill them with kindness, they’re easier to tame.

Bullies sometimes have

Hard lives and make others feel

Bad about themselves

But we need to be

Empathetic to bullies

And they might just change

Recycle with Michael update

Last week was incredibly busy for the NGHS Juniors Year 6 Sisters of Charity.   As well as running our pop-up Poppy Shop, they also had to deal with the huge response to this term's Recycle with Michael Appeal.  Well done, girls!

Thank you to every family that sent donations of used clothing and footwear.  This project helps to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted items from landfill, whilst highlighting the importance of reusing and recycling in a way that helps a worthy cause.

Cross country

Miss Abbott

We travelled to two cross country events this week, the first at Wollaton Park where we competed in the City Championships and came 5th overall.  Amelie was our highest finisher in 18th spot.

The following day we travelled to Highfields School in Newark for an U9 and U11 race, running against a host of Nottinghamshire state and independent schools.  The course was through the school grounds and we performed well, although a top 3 position was not for us on this occasion.  The girls learnt a lot about race tactics and pacing themselves, ready for future events.

Left:  No, Mrs Webster wasn't running late for the Recycle with Michael Collection!  😀
