A VERY SPECIAL BABY

Mrs Brown and Miss Duce

The stars light up the night time sky.  They sparkle, twinkle, float, flicker, dance and shine. But suddenly they have something new to do - can they spread the important news?

The answer is most definitely, yes they can!  What an amazing performance from the very youngest members of school.  Nursery and Reception girls illuminated the stage this week with their wonderful costumes, amazing singing and outstanding acting.  They wowed everyone with an absolutely outstanding performance of this year's Nativity, A Very Special Baby.

The stars shone brightly, the angels helped to spread the important news, Mary and Joseph found their way to Bethlehem, the Three Kings followed the brightest of stars, and the shepherds hurried along to see the very special baby.  How truly remarkable - well done, girls!

Does this belong to YOU?

Mindful of the cost of school uniforms and equipment - as well as the environmental impact of buying replacements - we are pleased to announce a new ♻️ RESALE AND RECYCLE ♻️ project to start in the New Year.  This will allow parents to purchase items of unlabeled lost property that remain unclaimed after one month, with proceeds going to good causes.

In the meantime, any items currently in lost property will be displayed in the Rainbow Room until 20 December - and anything unclaimed after that date will either be offered for resale next term or donated to charity.

Please check that ALL of your daughter's belongings are labelled - especially shoes and footwear, as we know these are expensive and time consuming to replace.  Please also ensure that you RELABEL any secondhand items which you purchase from school or the Facebook uniform group.

Life and death in ancient Egypt

Mrs Eggington

On Wednesday, Year 4 recapped and consolidated their current humanities topic with a study visit to the Leicester Museum & Art Gallery which hosts the most important collection of ancient Egyptian objects in the East Midlands.

The girls enjoyed touring the permanent exhibition that includes four mummified ancient Egyptians, shabti figurines and canopic jars - all of which shed light on how the ancient Egyptians viewed death and the afterlife.  There were also opportunities to handle and examine a range of artefacts which reveal interesting details about everyday life 4,500 years ago.

Busking 🎸

Mr Rolfe

Thank you to everyone - pupils, parents and staff alike - who sang, strummed, drummed and shook buckets to raise an amazing £1,068 for PASIC, last Saturday.  You braved wet weather and Christmas shopping crowds to help a fabulous cause that is so close to our hearts - a charity that supports young people with cancer, in memory of our former pupil Rose Whittle who died ten years ago.

Oh, the places you'll go!

Super Sustainable Christmas Jumper Day

Well done to the Year 6 girls from Eco Club and School Council who supervised this week's BIG SWAP, recycling and rehoming Christmas jumpers, and reducing the carbon footprints 👣 of over seventy pupils.  It was lovely to see our helpful and obliging changing room assistants in action, as customers from each year group arrived to choose and try on!

£155 has been raised for Save the Children by our Christmas Jumper Day project - thank you for your generosity, and ♻️  WHAT A SUPER SUSTAINABLE RESULT ALL ROUND!  ♻️

👧 Big Sister 👧🏿

Mrs Braud and Mrs Wood

Progression to Senior School starts early at NGHS Juniors, with pupils starting to work with secondary specialists as early as Year 4.

This gradual familiarization culminates in Year 6, where one of the most important cornerstones of our transition programme is the BIG SISTER project - Year 6 students mentored by Year 12 'big sister' role models, in preparation for new routines and expectations in Years 7 and beyond.

On Tuesday, our Big Sisters will welcome their Year 6 mentees to the Senior School, to meet staff and explore new surroundings; this will continue in the Spring Term, giving the girls plenty of opportunities to ask questions and explore the exciting seven years that lie ahead.

Food Waste Project

Mrs Fowler

The GDST provides opportunities for its students to collaborate in many ways, despite the geographical distances between our schools.  Last June, a group of NGHS Year 6 Eco Warriors travelled to Wimbledon High School to participate in the We Are One project celebration - a focus for all GDST Year 6 students to engage in sustainability ideas and create short campaign videos to encourage others to change behaviours and support environmental initiatives.  This video was created by our six former Year 6 students about food waste in school:

Inspired by this message, our Eco Club for 2023-24 committed to reducing food waste in our Dining Hall, and started by conducting a baseline food waste study over three days earlier this term.  The results were surprising, and were shared with our Junior School students:

Day One - 19.55kg of food waste

Day Two - 17.40kg of food waste

Day Three - 11.21kg of food waste

That's a whopping 48.16kg of food waste in just three days!

Following this revelation, suggestions were made and acted upon as to how waste might be reduced:

This week, the three-day food waste study was repeated, and the results indicate that waste has reduced.  More information will follow about this in January, during our whole school Green Month.

🎄 Nursery Christmas Craft Afternoon 🎄

Miss Duce

Our Nursery pupils and parents enjoyed a festive day earlier this week - a morning spent making Rudolph cakes, then families coming together in the afternoon to enjoy Christmas crafts.  A wonderful time was had by all, creating Santa faces and reindeer collages, and exploring a winter messy play activity.  This was also an opportunity to develop sharing behaviours, as well as fine motor and social skills.  🎅

Christmas party days

Tuesday 19 December - Nursery to Year 2 Christmas parties

Girls should come to school wearing their party clothes - but please ensure that sensible shoes (no heels) and winter coats are worn.

Tuesday 19 December - Years 3 to 6 Christmas parties

Girls should bring their party outfit to school in a named bag; clothes and shoes should be comfortable and appropriate for games and a disco - no heels, as these are unsafe for party games and are not permitted on the gymnasium floors.  Girls who have PE on a Tuesday morning will still require their PE kit in school.

Christmas post ✉️

Well done to our Year 6 postal workers who have been busy working collaboratively to sort the Christmas post, ready for delivery rounds.

A Postman Pat on the back is also due to Year 1, who have enjoyed spreading festive cheer and ensuring special deliveries are all made to the correct classrooms before we break up!

**  The final postbox collection will be on Monday  **

Cross country 🏃‍♀️

Miss Abbott

Last weekend saw the final cross country league race of the season, in extremely wet and muddy conditions.  Despite this, our girls showed RESILIENCE, dug deep and produced a solid result.

Overall, they finished 7th in the league and improved their team result with each round.  Congratulations to Esme, Florence, Minnie, Dina, Aaminah, Amelie, Hoor and Zoey who represented NGHS, and thank you also to the parent supporters who braved the elements!

Year 3 - Incredible India

As their colourful and creative humanities topic about life in India draws to its close, Year 3 have enjoyed learning about different styles of traditional Indian clothing.  The girls were amazed to see how long sarees are, and learnt how to wear them; Neve kindly brought in a peacock-inspired outfit from home and Mrs Bailey wore her own shalwar kameez.  This was followed up with the girls trying their hand at designing their own outfits.
