SPONSORED SPELL UPDATE 🔤🐝

This week's CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY recognised the effort and attainment of girls (and staff!) who have worked extra hard on spelling this term - at home, in class and for our upcoming annual sponsored spell challenge.   Mrs Fowler also sprung a spelling surprise test on Mrs Crawshaw, Mr Cox, Mrs Astill and Mrs Bailey - with room for improvement identified!

Well done to those pupils who earned special mentions and certificates of recognition, and to the many girls who are using this exercise as a revision opportunity - with end-of-year assessments due in some year groups later this term, these efforts will certainly pay off.

Thank you again to everyone who has already sponsored pupils and staff for this year's challengeHere's another opportunity to sponsor your daughter if you have not already done so:

And here's the information from the 19 April edition of SPARK, just in case you missed it:

News from Reception 🐻

Mrs Brown

"This porridge is just right!" - and the Reception girls ate it all up!   In our reception class,  we have been immersing ourselves in the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  This has involved retelling and reenacting the story, describing what Goldilocks looks like, making porridge in Upnah Wood, and sorting objects by size for each bear - all great opportunities for developing listening, speaking and writing skills!

Recycle with Michael is back! ♻️

We are delighted to confirm the return of this popular project that helps to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted items from landfill, whilst highlighting the importance of reusing and recycling in a way that helps worthy causes.

This term's collection  of used clothing and footwear will take place during the week beginning 20 May, but you can request sacks now.  Items do not have to be in re-saleable condition; anything that is unsuitable for the Salvation Army's charity shops will still be recycled responsibly!

Focus on Reading Journals - Year 4 📚

The Summer Term curriculum in Year 4 focusses on environmental issues, leading to a challenging and in-depth study in English lessons of The Iron Woman by Ted Hughes.  Written in 1993, this book explores human behaviours that pollute watercourses and endanger wildlife - so in many ways, this book was ahead of its time.

In preparation for this academically stretching and thought-provoking topic, the girls recently read The Iron Man in their own time.  Penned by the same author, this short story deals with issues of war and peace, and shares characters with its sequel The Iron Woman, including Hogarth and the almighty Space Bat Angel Dragon.

Mrs Eggington has been especially pleased with the creativity shown in 4E's recent independent Reading Journal tasks, which included some very humorous metallic menus for the Iron Man, wanted posters and book reviews.  What a fabulous effort, Year 4 - we feel sure that you will now really enjoy The Iron Woman later this term!

CBeebies - be in a studio audience! 📺

Our Nursery seedlings 🌱

Miss Duce

In Nursery, our youngest pupils are busy learning all about growth.  They have planted cress, beans and sunflower seeds, and have been thinking about what plants need in order to grow.

The study of scientific ideas at an early age helps to spark curiosity, extend language skills, and develop thought processes - especially when it is coupled with hands-on and exciting learning opportunities.  With this topic, the girls have been empowered to literally bring their learning to life, witnessing how roots grow downwards and shoots grow upwards by germinating beans in transparent bags.

Shrek the Musical 🎭

Mrs McDowell and Mr Rolfe

Wow!  What a performance, girls!  Shrek the Musical brought the house down on two successive afternoons and evenings this week, playing to packed audiences which included local schools, our own Junior School, and friends and families.

This was an inspiring and moving performance on all levels, showcasing excellent acting skills and musicality, and demonstrating boundless teamwork and enthusiasm for the performing arts.

Well done to everyone involved, and thank you to our administrative staff, Senior School students, the technical team, costume designers and makers, and front of house managers at The Space who helped so much behind the scenes.

Budding impressionists! 🧑‍🎨

Year 2 recently completed their Vincent Van Gogh inspired silhouette pictures, using pastels and black paint.  Well done for demonstrating both CREATIVITY and RESILIENCE, girls - these paintings required both attention to detail and the patience to follow through multiple steps.

LCME guitar exam success! 🎵

Mr Costin, Mr Jones, Mr Rolfe

Five of our Junior School guitarists recently sat their LCME acoustic guitar exams, with their tutors commenting on how well they prepared by working hard on each and every element - performance, music knowledge and aural assessment.  Such examinations ensure that our musicians are not only proficient players, but also well-rounded musicologists who are fully engaged with the academic side of their learning.

This week also saw a record number of sixty students sign up for Trinity College Music exams which will take place in school during the week beginning Monday 1 July, alongside further LCME guitar exams.  Well done to everyone!
