THE HIGHEST OF STANDARDS

Our recent ISI report confirms that Nottingham Girls' High School operates to the very highest standards. As well as best in class teaching methods, we also ensure that our processes are thorough, our compliance is accurate and the school is run in the very best way for our girls, staff and school community.

👈    We are delighted with this report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which recognises our continued excellent academic achievements and personal development.

SPONSORED SPELL UPDATE 🔤🐝

Thank you so much to everyone who has already sponsored pupils and staff for this year's challenge, and well done to those girls who have already made a flying start with their revision.  Teachers can tell who is practising (e.g. by looking at daily Spelling Shed reports), and next Friday's celebration assembly will recognise and reward effort, attainment and progress in this key area of the curriculum.

Here's a link to sponsor your daughter if you have not already done so:

And here's the information from last week's SPARK, just in case you missed it:

Behind the scenes at Shrek rehearsals 🎭

Mr Rolfe and Mrs McDowell

It’s been a really rewarding experience working with a year group as talented as Year 6!  This is the first time we have rehearsed Shrek to perform in school, and it is really stretching the girls.  Whilst not typically staged as a primary school musical (and written for an ensemble almost three times the size of ours), Year 6 are really rising to the challenge of delivering a high calibre performance.

Breaking new ground, this is also the first time we have invited some of our Year 2 pupils to take roles in a Year 6 production.  They have been an absolute delight to work with, and it has been moving to see them collaborating with the older girls so beautifully.

This production resonates with our school values and principles, celebrating diversity and who we are, and breaking down stereotypes.   By the end of the show, there is such a feel good factor and sense of joy - both on stage and in the auditorium.  We can’t wait for our invited audiences to see it next week!

Focus on Reading Journals - Year 5

The curriculum is always evolving at NGHS, with new reading books and topics being introduced each year which tie together the girls' learning in English, history and geography.

One such example is Year 5's study of Evie's War by the children's author Holly Webb, set during the Great War of 1914-1918.  As well as dealing with aspects of family life on the WW1 home front, the book also includes references to the work of the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), historical events that are linked to the plot of another Year 5 text, Room 13, and real-life settings which the girls will visit on their Summer Term residential field trip and study visit to Whitby.

Mr Cox and Mrs Crawshaw were especially pleased with 5MC and 5JC's recent independent Reading Journal tasks about the RNLI to kick off this topic, and everyone in Year 5 was thrilled to receive a personal message from Holly Webb to encourage them in their reading of Evie's War.

PLEASE HELP US TO HELP OTHERS!

We're collecting 5p pieces for the RNLI, which we'll present to the Whitby Lifeboat Station on our field trip in May.  So far, 5MC's welly of coins weighs 2.26kg and 5JC's is 1.77kg.  If you have any spare 5p pieces, please will you consider donating them before 8 May?   Thank you!

The Sheriff's Challenge 2023-2024 🚶‍♀️

An update from Miss Abbott

Above - Miss Abbott leads Physical Education and Games at NGHS Juniors.  Here she is, supporting England at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia!

The Sheriff’s Challenge is a series of activities which encourages children to run, walk, swim and cycle.  Each year, a different challenge is set with a ‘joint goal’ for schools to cumulatively reach plus individual pupil targets.  The overall aims of this project are:

Back in the Autumn Term, we were challenged to cumulatively Walk or Run around the World – that’s 24,000 miles!

Now that we have started a summer term of PE and sport, we are all rather busy with cricket, athletics and tennis in our lessons.  However we are still active in the Sheriff's Challenge, with participating schools having covered 21,314 miles so far and NGHS Juniors notching up an average of 24.3 miles per pupil - so we are within striking distance of our target of 26.2!  This puts us in second place - so if you are walking or running outside of school, please do let me know so that I can record your miles.

To help us achieve our target and move up the leaderboard, we will be taking part in the London mini marathon challenge on Friday 3 May when all girls will see how far they can walk or run in an allotted time - this will also be a House event, so don't forget those trainers and House T shirts!

Hopefully the sun will shine on our activities this term, culminating in two wonderful sports days after half term.  In the meantime, get walking!

🍾 A grand night out! 🥂
