We are BIG fans of upcycling in our high school library! When the maker movement hit and we had very few funds to create our own designated maker space, we didn't let that squelch our creativity! Inspired by the fine people and mission of the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse, we have been reusing, remixing, and remaking items from our library for many years. Further inspiration has come from fellow members of the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association who have generously shared many of the projects that their students have made in libraries around the state. Our Cricut Maker has just taken our upcycling potential to infinitely greater heights!
This glass jar was a yogurt container in a previous life! After a good cleaning, and the use of some adhesive remover on the label, this container makes a sweet candle holder with very minimal cost involved. A candle holder is the perfect project for both beginner upcyclers and beginner Cricut makers. See project steps and photos of the process below. QR code link to instructions.
Select a design in Cricut Access to place on a new project canvas. If you do not have Access, upload a copyright-free image into Design Space and place it on your canvas. You will need to select which spaces to weed from your image if you upload a design of your own.
Resize your image to fit onto your glass jar - it will most likely be rather small.
Use removable or permanent vinyl in the color of your choice and place it on the light grip mat for printing. Follow the instructions provided in Design Space to print your item.
Cut a square around your design so that you can use the leftover vinyl for another project.
Use weeding tools to remove any excess vinyl around your design.
Placing transfer tape over the final design is highly recommended. This will keep your intended spacing intact.
Pull the paper backing from your design so that it is only on the transfer tape and use the top edge of the tape as a spacing guide to line up with the top of your thoroughly cleaned and dried jar.
After pressing your design onto the glass jar, carefully remove the transfer tape. If any of your design does not adhere to the jar, carefully replace the transfer tape and press down on your design again until it stays on the glass. Follow directions on the vinyl roll if you are having trouble getting your vinyl to adhere.
