This page will include updates on the things that we are learning in the classroom. You will find the language used, strategies learned, and ideas on how to reinforce these topics at home with your 5th grader.
To help prepare for the transition to Norwayne Middle School, students played a fun Kahoot game with trivia about their new school. They also reflected on their year by responding to “around the room” questions that encouraged personal reflection and celebration of their growth.
5th grade had a lesson about the lasting effect of their words. This could be shaming or threatening language that carries more weight than they may realize.
While it is important that students let an adult know when one of their peers is continuously saying hurtful things, it isn't the only strategy they can use. We spent time talking about different ways to respond to someone, like using humor, changing the subject, and moving away. Please encourage your child to use multiple strategies when they are faced with this situation.
While we learned about gossip and friendship boundaries, we also got to hang out with our school facility dog, Buddy! :)
This week, we are talking about stress. How can we identify it in ourselves and name some recurring situations that cause us stress, along with some coping skills for those situations?
5th graders come to my room every other Thursday during their social studies core. We reviewed class expectations and learned how to complete a feelings check-in. At the beginning of each class, students are expected to identify their feelings by shading in an emoji and writing at least one emotion on the line.
