This page will include updates on the things that we are learning in the classroom. You will find the language used, strategies learned, and ideas on how to reinforce these topics at home with your 2nd grader.
For our last lesson, students are introduced to different careers with a bingo game played as a class. :)
2nd graders are working on how to say a problem without blame words like: always, never, or on purpose.
We can look different, sound different, and have different life experiences. In 2nd grade, we are working on being accepting of these differences so that everyone can feel included and belong.
A social filter helps us decide what to say out loud or keep in our heads. We practiced identifying when to use our filter to avoid hurting people's feelings.
2nd graders learned about the meaning of empathy last week. We played a game that is like headbands to practice "understanding how someone feels".
We will read a story and learn about the power of using "yet" for things that we are still learning. For example, "I can't shoot a basketball YET".
This week, we learned to identify the emotion "proud." Some students are confused about this emotion and happy. Continue to use this word in your conversations to describe the good feeling you get from accomplishing something difficult by yourself, with a group, or doing something nice for someone else.
This week, we learned the meaning of negative and positive self-talk. We talked about the importance of this so that we can feel happy and confident.
Second graders will visit my classroom for the first time this school year. We will be reviewing class expectations and how to do a feeling check-in. Every class they will be asked to identify how they are feeling by shading in an emoji!
