Introduction to Perspective:

Part 1: Optical Perspective

You use 5 optical perspectives when you draw but probably don't even know it!

For this project we will:

• Learn about 5 optical perspectives and understand how to identify them in a work of art. 

Your homework assignment:   You will observe an image carefully and identify the five categories of optical perspective. Take notes on the page provided.

Introduction to Perspective:

Part 3: linear perspective & 1 point perspective

Linear perspective was a mathematical system developed during the Renaissance, initially by architect and engineer named Brunelleschi.  The system, as it was developed and perfected, was soon utilized by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, to add  naturalistic conviction to their paintings.

For this project we will:  

Learn the rules in creating linear perspective which will prepare you for your one point perspective drawing; Illustrating a Positive Word.

Your homework assignment:  Create a positive word art illustration using one point perspective.

Part 4: Extension Project for Positive Word Art: Using Scratchboard

Scratchboard art is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. Scratchboard refers to both a fine-art medium, and an illustrative technique using sharp knives and tools for engraving into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with dark, often black India ink. Scratchboard can be used to yield highly detailed, precise and evenly textured artwork. Works can be left black and white, or colored. .

For this project we will:  

Learn the techniques used in working with the scratchboard medium.  you will create scratchboard art for your one point perspective drawing; Illustrating a Positive Word.

Your homework assignment:  Create your positive word art illustration in scratchboard.

Introduction to Perspective:

Part 5: Two Point Perspective

Two point perspective is a technique in which a three dimensional object is represented in two dimensions, and in which parallel lines in two of its dimensions are shown to converge towards two vanishing points.

For this project we will:  

Learn the rules of two point perspective drawing to complete your drawing of your very own Dream house .

Your homework assignment:  Create a dream home illustration using two point perspective.

Part 6:  Extension Project for Dream House Drawing: Using Watercolor

What are the characteristics of watercolor?

Watercolor is a medium that is almost by definition transparent. Paint layers can be seen through. The more you can see through the layer of color, the more transparent it is. If a watercolor at its most intense resembles black, it has a wide value range  Watercolor is both a fine-art and an illustrative medium.  

For this project we will:  

Learn 7 techniques in watercolor and apply these techniques when creating your two point perspective painting; Dream Home. 

Your homework assignment:  Create your Dream Home illustration in watercolor.

Introduction to Perspective:

Part 7: The Perspective Center

Sometime in perspective drawing, you may need to find the center of an object. For example, you'd  use perspective center if  you are drawing a door and you wanted to draw a knocker that is placed at the center of the door.  A very simple technique called “The Diagonal Method”  will help you find the perspective center of any object. 

For this project we will:  

Learn how to use perspective center "Fence or Tile Floor Technique", to create an illustration. 

Your homework assignment:  Create an illustration using perspective center, Fence or Tile Floor Technique. Be creative, create  anything you desire.  Some examples may be a hallway of lockers, City street, chess board, museum, a room in your house..
