Part 1: The History

Medieval art focus was on religion and Christianity. It included architectural details like stained glass art, large murals on walls and domed ceilings, and carvings on buildings and columns. It also included illuminated manuscript art and sculpture. 

For this project we will:

• Study Medieval art focusing on the the Art of  Beasties. 

• Create a contemporary beast that will personally benefit the artist.

• Learn the art of etching creating texture and value.

Your homework assignment: Brainstorm animals and their symbolism that may be used for your beastie.

Part 2: Let's Talk Beasts 

An Introduction to the bestiary 

For this project we will:

Introduce The Bestiary which was a compilation of  beasts created during Medieval times.  The stories of these animals provided moral and religious lessons. It served as a source for artistic invention.   You will follow the steps in this slide show to guide you through the process of brainstorming an idea in creating a contemporary beastie.  

Your class assignment:  You will complete all steps to your Beastie Idea Development Worksheet to help create a beastie that is reflective and functional in your world.

Part 3: Development of your contemporary beastie

Time to revisit composition

For this project we will:

Look at your three idea drawings completed in Medieval Art Part 2 and edit your Good idea sketch to create a good composition/Drawing.   You will follow the steps in this slide show to guide you through the process of creating a better composition to your beastie drawing.

Your Homework:  Finish adding final touches to your final composition beastie drawing.  Please make sure you have completed the check list before you hand in your drawing.

Part 4: 

Enlarge your drawing using the Grid Method

Working from your composition beastie drawing you will enlarge your image using the grid technique .

TIP: USE THE # M's OF DRAWING

• MAP

• MODIFY

For this project we will:

Follow the steps in each slide to enlarge your photograph.

Your homework assignment : Complete your enlargement of your composition drawing using the 3 M's of drawing technique described in the slide show.

Part 5: Transforming your Beastie into a scratchboard

This process will create a scratchboard paper that will transform your final artwork into an etching.

For this project we will:

Follow the steps in the slideshow to create your scratchboard paper. Remember to keep your  space clean and neat, and allow your ink to dry before you apply additional coats. 

Your Homework:  Be patient, let your paper dry don't forget to work on your color study.  overnight and continue to work on abstracting your drawing.

Part 6: All about texture and value: Etching Final

Texture, Value, and Etching...Putting it all together!

For this project we will:

• Learn about texture & value

• Learn  to create texture & value when etching

• learn the skill of etching 

Your Homework: Follow each step in this slide show to complete  your beastie art.   Be reflective, use your artistic license, and produce an original contemporary Medieval style Art.
