How we support SEN
In this section you will learn about:
How students are identified as requiring extra support
How we fit the support into the curriculum
Examples of how we quickly improve students fluency in reading
How students are identified as requiring extra support
Students are quickly identified as requiring intensive support with their reading. If a student scores low on their reading KS2 Scaled Scores, then we will ensure they have access to extra support.
How we fit the support into the curriculum
We strongly believe that being able to read with fluency and confidence is a right every student should have, and one that we allocate much time and resources to achieve.
This support will take place in the Learning Support area, where we will arrange small group and one-to-one sessions. Students will normally come out of French lessons for this support. This may be for a few weeks, months, or the whole of Y7. We feel that if students are struggling to read fluently, then a new language can cause greater confusion - until their fluency has improved.
Examples of how we quickly improve students fluency in reading
These sessions will focus much more on how to decode words, breaking them down into smaller sounds (phonemes). This will build on the phonics support that primary schools will already have given.
Examples of some interventions
The Literacy lessons in Skills, which focus on golden spelling rules, phonics and comprehension, grammar and punctuation as well as over/pre-learning fundamental skills for literacy to assist in understanding subject specific terminology and context.
One-to-one and small group interventions, using Lexonic leap (phonics) and Units of Sound (phoneme sounds/ digraphs/ trigraphs as a means of helping with spelling and memory.)
A to O spelling test to help identify missing digraph knowledge
Bespoke approaches based on the learners needs as well as listening to the pupil about the issues they identify as a barrier to learning and helping them to overcome them (overlay, reading pen, chromebook, confidence)
