Making Your Family Media Agreement

Follow these steps with your student:

1. Arrange a time to meet with your student for an extended discussion

  • Explain the purpose of this meeting; To co-create clear agreements about the expectations and boundaries around the use of technology this year.
  • Be sure to emphasize with your student as you discuss the purpose of making technology agreements at home; It is not easy to make life choices that limit or restrict our behaviors. Remain calm and understanding of the student's perspective while encouraging them to appreciate the positive outcomes that will result from this activity.

2. Complete the form below

  • This form requires that your student use their school e-mail and password to access it. Discuss each of the check boxes with your student, and add your own agreements as they come up during the discussion in the text areas. It should take about 30 minutes to do this.
  • While it is required that parents/guardians complete this process, the agreements that you set are dependent upon your family's existing norms and expectations, as well as your understanding of your student's unique personality traits and habits.

3. Reread the agreements

  • After you've submitted the form, analyze what you've agreed to do. Are there any agreements that remain unclear to you or your student? Which agreements will require the most changes to be made at home? Which agreements will require the most effort from family members?
  • Take the time now to ensure that everyone understands that adhering to the agreements begins now.

4. Save it, post it, and refer to it

  • The best way to ensure that this process is honored for the rest of the year is to make the agreements visible. Save these agreements and post them in a prominent place. When your student is making the right choices with technology, or in the event that they make a poor choice, refer to these agreements.
  • We realize that this may not be easy. However, we encourage you to stick to what you've agreed upon, and to adjust only when it is in the best interests of the safety and health of the student.
