Video Tour of Sixth Grade Woodworking!

Sixth graders can look forward to learning how to safely and successfully use a variety of hand tools at first. Later in the six-week term students will be introduced to some smaller machines such as the drilling machine, scroll saw, spindle sander, palm sander, and engraver.Â
Day 1-3: The 6th Grade Woodworking Course begins with a safety discussion and project discussion. Both handouts need to be signed by a parent and the student. The signatures give permission to the student to participate in the course and also promise responsibility on the part of the student with respect to safety and the cost of projects.
Day 4-9: First the students make a practice project where a piece of pine is given to the student and the student chooses to cut a word, name, shape, or logo that they enjoy. Tools used: coping saw, files, sandpaper, drill press, paint or stain, and polycrylic. Time: 4-6 days
Day 10-30: Next the students receive pine boards to build a 4-piece wall shelf. The shelf is 18 inches long. This project is graded according to the woodworking standards rubric. Tools used: coping saw, files, sandpaper, cordless drill, hammer, screws, nails, wood filler, paint or stain, and polycrylic. Time: 10-20 days.
If the student has additional time left in the term they may choose to complete an optional choice project. This is where the advancing students may be introduced to some small machines and power tools. Optional project choices include: Key Rack, Tombstone Clock, Pop Can Lamp, Engraved Sign, Tic Tac Toe Game, Necklace/Key Chain, Mini Hockey Stick, Mini Cutting Board 9" x 9".
