Norman Public Schools is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, ethical, and digitally aware environment for students and staff. Federal CIPA certification requires that schools certify that their internet safety policies have been updated to provide for educating minors about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and cyberbullying awareness and response. Norman Public Schools is using the digital citizenship curriculum from CommonSense Education for Kindergarten through 12th grade to meet these goals.
Create a free account on the Common Sense Education website. Use your NPS Google account to sign in to the website.
The complete lesson plans are on the Common Sense Education website. Each lesson plan is linked in the Teacher Notes in each activity. The Common Sense Education lessons have slides, handouts, discussion prompts and more. Most lessons will take 30-45 minutes to complete.
Pace the lessons appropriately for your students. Lessons can be spread out over several days if needed.
Remember that all lessons and activities should be completed by the final day of the fall semester.
It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to ensure all new students complete the Digital Citizenship lessons, even if those lessons have already been covered in class.
Upon completion of all lessons, teachers will record student completion of Digital Safety & Citizenship lessons in their grade book. Directions on how to do this can be found here.
