Hannibal Hamlin was the first Vice President of Abraham Lincoln, and the first Republican Vice President of America. He started as a Democrat in the House of Representatives and later moved onto the Senate. He was an abolitionist, and switched to the Republican party in 1856. Hannibal Hamlin was replaced by Southern Sympathizer Andrew Johnson during the 1864 election.
While he was Vice President, he was a member of Company A of the Maine State Guard, and opted to serve when they were called to action in 1864. He was promoted to Corporal during this time. After his stint as Vice President, he worked as the Collector of the Port of Boston, and served two more terms in the Senate before retiring.
Hannibal Hamlin (1809-1891) was born in Paris, Maine (then Massachusetts). There is a piece of folklore that states his life was saved by a Native American medicine woman named Molly Ockett when he was an infant. His father, Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, built the original home later owned by the Washburn family and located on the same property as the Norlands Mansion today.
