INTRODUCTION TO WELLNESS & SPORT

This will be a mandatory class for all students newly enrolled in Physical Education. Students will learn how to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Students will be exposed to various activities that will improve their cardiovascular health and overall well-being. The emphasis of this class will be to encourage students to find what fitness strategies work for them. Students will participate in a wide variety of activities, including the PACER test, Cooper Test, One Mile Walk test, as well as many strength training assessments. Students will also learn to set goals and strive to develop techniques that will allow them to maintain a certain level of fitness for the rest of their lives. Students will have a chance to participate in various team sports and lifetime activities so they can see which avenue they would like to choose when selecting future PE courses.
TEAM SPORTS & COMPETITIVE GAMES

Students who take this course will participate in various team sports and other games. Sports may include: soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball, and team handball. Students will receive proper instruction and be asked to utilize the basic fundamental skills associated with each sport. This course will also encourage students to participate in a competitive nature while having fun at the same time. This course will also emphasize the importance of teamwork, fair play, and sportsmanship. Safety, rules, and strategies of the games are heavily emphasized. This course can fulfill a student’s second semester of Physical Education requirement or can be taken as an elective. Students will be assessed according to the state standards of Ohio.
INDIVIDUAL SPORTS & LIFETIME ACTIVITIES

Students who enroll in this course will participate in a wide variety of individual and recreational sports. Activities may include: tennis, pickleball, badminton, golf, table tennis, bowling, and fitness for life. Students will gain the skills required for each activity and an understanding of basic strategy and rules that apply. Students will identify and utilize various individual activities that will allow them the opportunity to maintain a high level of health and wellness throughout a lifetime. This course can fulfill a student’s second semester of Physical Education requirement or can be taken as an elective. Students will be assessed according to the state mandates of Ohio.
FITNESS AND FLEXIBILITY

This Physical Education elective is participatory in nature and will emphasize the importance of quality fitness and self-awareness of individual fitness. Students will be introduced to activities including, but not limited to Yoga, Zumba, Pilates, Aerobics, Dance, Stretching, and Strength Training. This course requires a very high level of active participation. Students will be required to purchase their own yoga mat. This course can fulfill a student’s second semester of Physical Education requirement or can be taken as an elective. Students will be assessed according to the state standards of Ohio.
PLYOMETRICS, AGILITY, AND WEIGHTS (PAW)

This Physical Education course is meant to stress the importance of personal health and fitness through participation in weight training, plyometrics, CrossFit, resistance training, etc. This course is intended to improve the students’ balance, coordination, speed, stability, and quickness. In addition, this course will focus on proper training techniques that motivate students to achieve maximum performance while decreasing their risk for injury at the same time. Proper use of equipment and safety techniques is heavily emphasized. This course requires a very high level of active participation.
This course can fulfill a student’s second semester of Physical Education requirement or can be taken as an elective. Students will be assessed according to the state standards of Ohio.
LEADERSHIP IN SPORT AND SPORTS ANALYSIS

Leadership in Sport and Sports Analysis will look at how leaders in sport and their role in running successful athletic programs foster high-functioning teams. This course is designed for students possibly interested in the field of coaching, the management and organization of teams in general, or a career in sport analytics. Students will learn guidelines and principles for organizing a successful athletic program. Students will also learn current trends in analytics in sports. Topics include, but are not limited to, developing a coaching philosophy, evaluating theories in motivation, understanding team dynamics, communicating effectively, improving player performance, analytics used in various sports, and how coaches use analytics in real game situations. This course will also emphasize an awareness of the demands of the coaching profession and explore issues and ethical considerations significant to coaching.
OHSAA OFFICIATING

Prerequisite- Interest in athletics, physical education, or leadership
This course is designed to prepare students to earn an OHSAA officiating permit in one or more sports. It
will help students develop communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills through simulated and
real-game experiences. Through this course, students will foster understanding of the rules, mechanics,
and ethics of interscholastic athletics. It will also provide experiential learning through officiating youth
or intramural events. Finally, this course will promote lifelong engagement in athletics and community
service through officiating.
HEALTH

This course examines and addresses the health-related issues that affect today’s growing adolescents. The topics to be addressed will correlate with the various components of health, such as physical, mental, social, emotional, and environmental. A sampling of the topics to be covered includes: personal health and habits, human growth and development, relationships, human reproduction, safety, first aid & CPR, chemical use/abuse/prevention, and diseases.
